Amy Sheppard: ‘I have been really pushing the envelope and challenging myself’

Sheppard sibling Amy Sheppard has been to Nashville to work on solo music, with a solo album with a country twist on its way. But don’t expect it to be the end of Sheppard.

Amy Sheppard is going solo with a country twist.

Having recently travelled to Nashville on a songwriting trip, the Sheppard band member is working towards releasing her own album.

“I have been really pushing the envelope and challenging myself, travelling by myself and just having new experiences,” she told Confidential.

“I am a pop writer but it was definitely interesting working with country writers and country artists to see the way that they do things. I would say what we’ve come up with is pop country.”

The muso is in the band Sheppard with siblings George and Emma and has no intention of leaving that group.

Her solo music though is something she’s been keen to develop.

In Nashville she wrote with Nash Chambers, the songwriter brother of Kasey Chambers, and Lindsay Rimes.

“I just went out there to see what would happen,” she explained. “I was feeling really creative. I just had the bug and so I had to go over and connect with some of these writers and ended up writing a few country pop songs which are exciting me.”

Sheppard are one of Australia’s top bands, having released hit singles Geronimo, Let Me Down Easy and Coming Home.

“I might let George have a little feature if he’s lucky,” she joked of her solo work. “At this stage it was a solo writing trip. It is still in its infancy but that is what I am working towards.”

She recently released a single titled Kiss My Fat Arse and launched a campaign of the same name aimed at empowering women to ditch the filters on social media and embrace their insecurities by sharing pictures online using the hashtag.

“It is projects like this that really build and boost my confidence these days, not so much how I look,” she said.
