Katie Holmes has rubbished claims that her daughter, Suri, is now the beneficiary of a “substantial” trust fund provided by Tom Cruise, Holmes’ ex-husband and the teenager’s estranged father.
On Friday, The Daily Mail published an “exclusive” report that Cruise and Holmes’ 18-year-old came into “a great deal of money” after her birthday in April, when the trust fund “kicked in”.
“It is a part of the divorce deal that a trust fund provided by Tom Cruise be shared with daughter Suri Cruise when she turns 18, and it is substantial,” the outlet credited an “unnamed source” as saying.
“She was allowed to access it when she turned 18 in April. The rest of the money will become available to her once she enters her 30s. The trust fund was carefully confronted so that she does not get all the money at once and becomes overwhelmed.”
After sharing an Instagram tile on Sunday that read “don’t believe everything you read on the Internet” (a quote wrongfully-attributed to William Shakespeare), Holmes explicitly addressed the report in another post this morning.
Over a screenshot of the article, the actor wrote: “Completely False. Daily mail you can stop making stuff up.”
“Enough,” she added in the caption.
The publication also claimed that Holmes – who has a reported net worth of $US25 million ($39m) had set up her own trust fund for Suri – which the actor denied.
Cruise, meanwhile, is allegedly worth over $US600m ($938m).
The former couple – dubbed “TomKat” by the media – were engaged in June 2005, weeks after going public with their relationship.
They welcomed Suri in April 2006, married that November, and six years later, in June 2012, announced their divorce.
“This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family,” a representative for Holmes said at the time.
“Katie’s primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter’s best interest.”
It’s long been reported that Holmes’ split from Cruise was due to his role as a high-profile member of the Church of Scientology.
Former Scientologist Leah Remini, who filed a lawsuit against the institution in 2024 claiming she had been “stalked, surveilled, harassed, threatened and intimidated” by its members, spoke of Holmes’ abrupt exit from the church and divorce from Cruise in 2017.
“I had no idea the pressure she was under,” Remini told The Adam Corolla Show.
“I had no idea she was aware of what was really going on. I had no idea that she was trying to save her daughter.”
Reflecting on her divorce in an interview with InStyle in 2022, Holmes described it as an “intense” time.
“It was a lot of attention, and I had a little child on top of it,” she told the magazine.
“We had some funny moments out and about in public. So many people I didn’t know became my friends and helped us out, and that’s what I love about (New York).”
Holmes was granted full custody of Suri. While Cruise was afforded ample visitation, InTouch Weekly reported in 2016 that the Top Gun star hadn’t seen or spoken to his youngest child in over two-and-a-half years.
Suri’s decision to drop her surname at her high school graduation ceremony – instead going by her first and middle names, Suri Noelle – further hinted at their estranged relationship.
Holmes has previously spoken about protecting Suri from negative media coverage, telling Glamour in April last year: “What has been really important for me with my daughter, because she was so visible at a young age, is I really like to protect her.”
“I’m very grateful to be a parent, to be her parent,” she added. “She’s an incredible person.”
