Cher learns to ‘take the piss’ in hilarious Aussie TV campaign

Cher has turned back time in a cheeky ad campaign and the 78-year-old has hinted she may tour Down Under soon.

Superstar Cher has opened up about finding love and happiness at 78, the Australians in her team who taught her how to “take the piss,” and hints she will tour Down Under to support her last-ever album.

Cher has forged new ties in Australia with a new campaign for a food delivery brand, which pokes fun at her appearance, and pays homage to her 1989 megahit, Turn Back Time, and its iconic music video.

The campaign, for Uber Eats Australia, finds Cher turning back time, and being accidentally transported back to the 1680s. “She’s both young and old at the same time,” a confused local says, before Cher is charged with being a witch.

“It makes fun of everything I’ve done and who I am,” Cher told the Herald Sun. “I don’t care; funny is funny.”

Cher is co-managed by Australians Roger Davies and Lindsay Scott. She said the Australian trait to laugh at ourselves inspired her.

“I’m always taking the piss,” Cher said. “I take the piss out of myself, and everybody else. I’m serious, but sometimes you need a sense of humour … to keep you going and makes you feel like, whatever’s happening, it’s OK.”

Cher, 78, said she never worried about age or appearance based on advice from her mother, Georgia Holt, who passed away three years ago, aged 96.

“My mother always said, ‘If you don’t pay attention to age, it won’t pay attention to you,’” Cher shared.

She isn’t giving much focus, either, to the 40-year age gap between herself and boyfriend Alexander Edwards, a record company executive and music producer, who will collaborate on Cher’s next album.

Cher has said the album will be the last in a 60-year career that has included hits like Believe, Strong Enough, The Shoop Shoop Song and I Got You Babe.

“My boyfriend is a great producer. He’s really smart and he’s picked the best songs,” she said. “He’s an amazing person, an amazing father. This has been really great for me, at a time that I never expected it.”

Edwards shares a son with his ex, model and TV presenter Amber Rose.

Meanwhile, Cher hints she will tour Australia to support her new record.

“When the new album comes out, I’ll probably be coming (to Australia),” Cher said.

“You can never tell what I’m going to do.”

Cher last performed in Melbourne in 2018 on the Here We Go Again tour, which came 13 years after a global farewell tour.
