A brush with the law won’t dampen Shailene Woodley’s enthusiasm for the environment.
Ten days after she was arrested for trespassing while protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline, the Divergent star, 24, made her first public appearance, catching a special screening of the Leonardo DiCaprio-produced documentary Before the Flood at United Nations headquarters in Manhattan on Thursday night.
Dressed in a mismatched Canadian tuxedo, the actress took in the Oscar winner’s new film about climate change. DiCaprio also appears in the film, as do President Barack Obama, Pope Francis and Secretary of State John Kerry.
On October 10, Woodley was one of hundreds of activists at a construction site in Sioux County, North Dakota, when she was arrested for trespassing and engaging in a riot. The actress was at the protest in support of the Standing Rock Sioux tribe, which claims the $3.8 billion pipeline would destroy sacred lands and affect their water supply. Earlier this week, she pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Before Woodley attended the screening, Time published an essay by the actress about her arrest and why she was protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline.
“I am not scared,” she wrote. “I am not afraid. I am grateful, and I am amazed to be standing by the sides of so many peaceful warriors.”
