But first it was all about the fashion.
At first glance US actress Jamie Chung appeared to be rocking a bright red gown with matching accessories.
But her co-ordinating handbag featured a bold message engraved across the front, “Stop Asian Hate”.
The Lovecraft Country star, who was up for an award for the HBO show, took to Instagram to say she was “proud” of her culture and wanted to embody that at the awards.
“In some Asian cultures, the color red symbolizes (sic) joy, luck and happiness. In Korean culture it symbolizes (sic) creation, passion and power. I’m so proud of my history and heritage,” she wrote.
The “Stop Asian Hate” movement has picked up in momentum recently following a mass shooting at massage parlours in Atlanta last month, which saw six Asian women shot dead.
A recent report showed racism against Asians in Australia is on the rise. The Asian Australian Alliance told news.com.au that more than 300 incidents of racism had been reported as part of a coronavirus racism incident survey.
Elsewhere on the “red carpet”, Kaley Cuoco, who was up for an award for The Flight Attendant, made a statement in top-to-toe pink.

Australian actress Nicole Kidman wears a heavenly Giorgio Armani frock with intricate beading and sheer silhouette.

It’s been a minute since pink was the colour of choice at a Hollywood awards show. Sarah Levy of the Levy family dynasty looks positively luminous in a soft blush strapless dress.
Elle Fanning is groovy in Gucci.
This thread is beginning to look like a catalogue. So much colour co-ordination going on! Here’s nominee Glenn Close in regal red, courtesy of Oscar de la Renta.
Trust US actress Kerry Washington to stand out from the rest in a divine embroidered, royal blue creation teamed with matching headpiece.
And she’s posing all nonchalant in a pool, does it get any more extra?
A queen.
Ladies and gentleman, the diamond of the season, UK actor Jonathan Bailey, aka Anthony Bridgerton.
Actor Sam McCarthy proving suits aren’t just black and white.
Then there’s Gillian Anderson, who is wearing a bathrobe, boots and doesn’t look quite ready for the paparazzi close up.
