Prince Harry reveals if he’d ever return to work as a senior royal in the UK

For the first time, Prince Harry has addressed whether he’d ever return to the UK in a new trailer for his “revealing” TV special airing this Sunday.

Prince Harry: ‘I want my dad, brother back’

Prince Harry has finally addressed whether he would ever return to the UK to work as a senior royal.

The 38-year-old Duke of Sussex has filmed a “revealing” TV special for US 60 Minutes ahead of the release of his memoir Spare on January 10, with a new trailer revealing his blunt response to the burning question.

In the 20-second teaser, released on Twitter ahead of the interview airing on Sunday in the US, CNN anchor Anderson Cooper asks: “Can you see a day when you would return as a full-time member of the royal family?”

Without hesitation, Harry says, “No.”

While Harry and wife Meghan Markle, 41, have given countless interviews about their time in the royal family since moving to the US in early 2020 – including their explosive six-part Netflix documentary which dropped in December – it’s the first time Harry has answered a question about his possible return to the UK.

Elsewhere in the chat, Harry further levelled allegations of “leaks” in the press, claiming negative stories about him and Meghan were often planted by communication teams for senior members of the royal family.

“Every single time I tried to [talk] privately, there have been briefings and leakings and planting of stories against me and my wife,” Harry said.

“You know, the family motto is ‘never complain, never explain’ … It’s just a motto and it doesn’t really hold.

“Through leaks, they will speak or have a conversation with the correspondent and that correspondent will literally be spoonfed information and write the story, and at the bottom of it they will say they reached out to Buckingham Palace for comment, but the whole story is Buckingham Palace commenting.”

It comes after the father-of-two took the rare step of declaring he wanted to reconcile with his father, King Charles III, and brother, Prince William, in a separate interview with ITV’s Tom Bradby, which is the second of only two media interviews he’s given to promote his book.

In a trailer released yesterday, Harry said: “It never needed to be this way. The leaking, the planting, I want a family – not an institution.

“They feel as though it’s better to keep us, somehow, as the villains. They’ve shown absolutely no willingness to reconcile.

“I would like to get my father back. I would like to have my brother back.”

Royal watchers are eagerly awaiting the release of Harry’s book next week, which publisher Penguin Random House previously said would be a reflection on grief, love and healing.

Spare takes readers immediately back to one of the most searing images of the 20th century: Two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow – and horror,” Penguin House released in a statement.

“As Diana, Princess of Wales, was laid to rest, billions wondered what the princes must be thinking and feeling – and how their lives would play out from that point on.

“For Harry, this is his story at last.

“With its raw, unflinching honesty, Spare is a landmark publication full of insight, revelation, self-examination, and hard-won wisdom about the eternal power of love over grief.”
