KIM Kardashian sparked an online backlash when she sported braided hair at the MTV Movie & TV Awards earlier this week.
But the reality TV star has defended wearing the hairstyle — despite being accused of racial appropriation when sporting braids in the past.
Kim told Bustle that she had worn her hair in braids at the request of her five-year-old daughter North, who has curly hair and often wears the hairstyle.
“I actually didn’t see backlash. I actually did that look because North said she wanted braids and asked if I would do them with her. So we braided her hair and then we braided my hair,” Kim said.
Kim Kardashian in these braids is exhausting. The most annoying part is that at this point she knows what sheâs doing, she knows what cultural appropriation is and that it upsets people yet she still chooses to do it because she knows it doesnât upset the right ppl or cost her $$

In January Kim sparked another social media storm after calling her plaited hairstyle “Bo Derek braids” — referencing the 1970s caucasian actress.
“I obviously know they’re called fulani braids, and I know the origin of where they came from, and I’m totally respectful of that. I’m not tone deaf to where I don’t get it. I do get it,” Kim told Bustle.
She admits she maybe shouldn’t have referred to them as “Bo Derek braids” but denied she was guilty of cultural appropriation.
“But in no way am I ever trying to disrespect anyone’s culture by wearing braids. If anything, my daughter was so excited to see me get matching braids with her. [When] we did her hair in these braids, she was so excited,” Kim said.
