Prince Harry should pay Canadian police out of his own pocket to protect his family when he moves across the Atlantic, a leading royal author says.
The Queen has given her blessing for the royal couple to move to Canada to bring up their son Archie out of the limelight.
The young family has been staying in a mansion on Vancouver Island during a six-week break, which appears likely to be extended.
However, Scotland Yard staff have been flying across to Canada to protect the royal couple in shifts.
Penny Junor, a leading royal author, said that the situation was untenable.
“Maybe Prince Harry should pay for their own protection, which is what celebrities do,” she said.
There has been disquiet among some British royal protection officers at the long-distance role they have been forced to take on.
“It would make much more sense if they move there to have Canadian police rather than British police officers protect them,” she said.
“Those (British) officers are missing out on their families and are being flown over at great expense to the taxpayer.”

Meghan’s post-royal career revealed
Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau has privately told the Queen that his country would foot the security bill for Prince Harry and Meghan while they were in the country.
The London Evening Standard said that Mr Trudeau had assured Her Majesty that the royal couple and Archie would be safe in Canada.
However, any move to make Canadian taxpayers foot the bill may cause a backlash there.
Prince Harry and Meghan have been listed as internationally protected people.
They have a significant entourage and even flew in Range Rovers for their trip of southern Africa to make sure they were secure.
The couple said on their new Sussexroyal website last week that they expected to continue to have security even if they went part time.
“The provision of armed security by The Metropolitan Police is mandated by the Home Office, a ministerial department of Her Majesty’s Government, responsible for security and law & order,” the website said.
Prince Harry has been floated as a potential future Governor General of Canada.
He had been previously linked to the same job in Australia but the idea was rejected in case it prompted anti-monarchy sentiment.
