UK pop icon Robbie Williams shocked Brisbane breakfast listeners on Wednesday morning when he hijacked an interview on B105’s Stav, Abby & Matt to ruthlessly mock radio host Matty Acton’s fashion sense.
The interview, conducted over Zoom from South Africa, was meant to focus on Williams’ new biopic ‘Better Man’ but quickly derailed when the singer zeroed in on Acton’s questionable fashion choice.
“I can just see one of you, and I’ve instantly got a question,” Williams began, pointing out Acton’s cowboy-inspired shirt.
Probing into Acton’s decision-making process, the Angels hit maker grilled the host, asking, “You saw that shirt and you went, ‘Yeah, that shirt.’ Take me through that process.”
A flustered Acton attempted to justify his outfit — a long-sleeve button-up emblazoned with cowboy-themed designs — was originally purchased as a joke for a bull-riding stunt and that he’d decided to wear it for a photo shoot “to mess with the marketing girl”.
However, Williams wasn’t buying it, going so far as to say that the offending outfit was what a “blind cowboy” might wear, likening Acton’s style to what billionaire tech mogul Elon Musk might put on before being stopped by a PR team.
“That outfit, it’s giving to me what Elon Musk must wear before he leaves the house and a team of people go, no, no, no, don’t do that. Put this on,” Williams said.
Even co-host Abby Coleman admitted she’d been caught off-guard by the casual cowboy surf vibe, telling Williams she too was baffled when Acton strolled into the studio sporting the flashy shirt and sneakers combination.
“When I first saw you and he’s wearing sneakers as well with all my jeans, and I was like, oh my god, what am I working?,” she said.
The singer went on to dismiss rumours that he’d be appearing on the reality TV series ‘I’m A Celebrity … Get Me Out Of Here’ Australia, addressing media speculation that his time in South Africa was tied to the show’s production.
“You’re the second person to ask me that today … But I can assure you, I’m not [on the show], but I should have been,” he joked.
As the interview wrapped up, Williams humorously proposed a future Brisbane shopping trip with Acton during his next visit to Australia, expressing his curiosity about the radio host’s approach to fashion.
“We should do it — it’d be very interesting to see your emotional process while shopping,” he joked.
