Adele has described the “worst moment” in her career in a candid new interview.
The 15-time Grammy winner, 34, posed on the cover for the October issue of Elle UK, where she revealed cancelling her Las Vegas residency on the eve of the opening show was “by far” the most difficult period in her working life.
“It was the worst moment in my career, by far,” she told the publication. “I was so excited about those shows. It was devastating.
“The first couple of months was really, really hard. I was embarrassed. But it actually made my confidence in myself grow, because it was a very brave thing to do.”
In a video posted to her Instagram in January, a teary Adele announced her hotly-anticipated Caesars Palace residency “wasn’t ready” due to Covid and other production delays.
Rumours of rifts with production managers and concert organisers quickly followed in the months afterwards. And now, Adele has finally come clean.
“There was just no soul in it. The stage set-up wasn’t right. It was very disconnected from me and my band, and it lacked intimacy,” Adele explained.
“And maybe I tried too hard to give it those things in such a controlled environment.”
However, after a “really, really hard” couple of months, Adele says she’s seen her self-confidence grow and is proud that she refused to compromise her “artistic needs.”
It was announced last month that the new show will run for 32 dates from November until March 2023, and will document her rise to the top from breakthrough single Hometown Glory in 2007 to the present day.
“I want to tell the story of the beginning of my career to now. I’m not gonna give too much away about it, but the show grows,” she said.
“It’s all about the music, and it’s really, really nostalgic. It’s gonna be really beautiful.
“It’s been really emotional putting the set list and the visuals together, because so much has happened. Fifteen years is a long time. But one thing I feel so lucky about, even with how big my life is now, is that I really lived a normal life.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Adele spoke in detail about how she wants to walk down the aisle and start a family with US sports agent Rich Paul.
The Hello singer said: “I’ve never been in love like this. I’m obsessed with him.”
In May, the couple spent $72 million on Sylvester Stallone’s former Beverly Hills mansion, which Adele plans to make their family home.
Adele added: “I definitely want more kids. I’m a homemaker and I’m a matriarch, and a stable life helps me with my music. But right now, all I got in my brain is Vegas. I wanna f***ing nail it.”
The mum-of-one met her first husband Simon Konecki in 2011 before welcoming their son, Angelo, in 2012.
Five years later they were married, with the Someone Like You hit maker casually telling fans at a concert in Brisbane, Australia she was married and had “found my next person”.
By April 2019 it was all over – with Adele telling Oprah Winfrey she felt she had “disappointed” her son and was “embarrassed” it didn’t work out.
But the heartbreak hasn’t put her off saying “I do” one more time – quickly replying “yes, absolutely” when asked if she wants to remarry.
Her candid answers during the interview do not last long, though.
When asked if she is already engaged after attending this year’s Brit Awards with a giant rock on her engagement finger, Adele said: “Well, I’m not married. I’m just in love. I’m happy as I’ll ever be. I might as well be married.”
She later teases: “I’m not engaged. I just love high-end jewellery, boy.”
Her debut album 19, much of which was penned when she was just 16, turned her into an overnight star and was a UK number one.
It kickstarted a long list of awards for Adele which now includes 12 Brit Awards and 15 Grammys.
Her career quickly snowballed with her second and third albums 21 and 25 spawning global mega hits Someone Like You and Hello respectively.
After six years hidden away from the world in the Californian hills and recovering from vocal surgery which forced her to cut her 2017 world tour short, Adele returned this year with Easy On Me.
The track, which served as the lead single to her fourth album 30, broke streaming records around the world with 24 million plays in the first week.
The October issue of Elle UK is on sale from September 1.
