When Bianca Censori dropped her coat to the floor on the Grammys red carpet, it wasn’t just the fact she appeared naked that shocked. It exposed an uncomfortable power dynamic.
Usually, when a celebrity rocks up almost naked somewhere, there’s some outcry about public decency, but people aren’t genuinely concerned for the star’s wellbeing.
The 30-year-old Aussie has been dating Kanye West, 47, since 2023. During their high-profile relationship, we’ve watched as she’s become increasingly scantily clad at A-list events, and now naked on the red carpet at the 67th Grammy Awards.
I don’t think revealing looks or even partial nudity shocks anyone in 2025. Will and Jada Smith’s 24-year-old daughter Willow turned up in nothing but lingerie and a jacket and people online aren’t expressing concerns about her wellbeing.
The issue with Censori’s nudity is that, from the outside – and who knows what is truly going on behind closed doors in their relationship – she doesn’t appear to be in a position of power.
Online, observers were deeply concerned; someone claimed she didn’t look “happy”, another called the display of nudity “extremely worrying”.
One fan believed she needed to be “saved”, while another said she looked “terrified”, and multiple people claimed she looked like she was “dissociating”.
Across the board, internet users were genuinely unsettled by the revealing photos and the questionable stunt reignited concern for Censori.
Yes, there were some who argued she was doing it for “attention” and is a grown woman capable of making her own decisions, but Censori’s nudity mostly sparked discomfort and fear for the Aussie architect herself.
The response was a far cry from the days when Kim Kardashian was married to West, and whatever sexy outfit she wore when they stepped out together wasn’t met with outrage and worry that she didn’t have enough autonomy.
It comes down to the fact that Kardashian was always in a position of power; she was equally, if not more famous, than her rapper husband throughout their eight-year marriage.
She was already a major, established celebrity with a literal army of famous family members around to support her, whereas Censori – who hails from Melbourne – is living overseas from her family, and hasn’t amassed her own empire.
According to her LinkedIn profile, her last job was as an architectural designer at West’s fashion brand Yeezy before they started dating.
So, their relationship presumably began while she was an employee, and he, as her boss, was once again in a traditional position of power.
While Censori’s net worth is unknown, West claims he is a billionaire. A more conservative estimate by Forbes puts his net worth at $400 million.
He has also had an incredibly successful career. He is still widely considered one of the best rappers ever, and he has achieved huge commercial and critical success.
While West may claim to have been “cancelled”, he is an award-winning music star, designer and entrepreneur who also founded Yeezy, a luxury fashion label.
West, cancelled or not, is an incredibly powerful person.
He is so famous that, like Cher, he can go by his first name, Kanye, without sparking any confusion around who exactly it refers to.
Meanwhile, Censori’s fame has only soared due to her relationship with West and her increasingly risque outfits, which have drawn media and online attention.
As the 67th Grammy Awards kicked off, footage of West allegedly telling Censori to drop her coat on the red carpet started circulating and quickly went viral.
Lip reader Nicola Hickling told The Daily Mailthat West allegedly told his partner to “make a scene”.
She shook her head in response, and then West allegedly added, “Drop it behind you and then turn. I got you.”
Censori complied, and, according to Hickingly, said: “All right, let’s go.”
It is impossible to know if Bianca Censori is empowered in her relationship with the rapper, but the optics are a tough pill for most people to swallow.
She’s an Aussie woman from Melbourne. While she has had her own success, the bulk of her wealth, fame and privilege appears to be linked to Kanye West - or at least that’s what her public image suggests.
Watching her on a red carpet allegedly being told it is time to take her jacket off to reveal her nakedness by her older and extremely powerful husband felt wrong.
West was standing beside her, fully clothed, and on the Grammys red carpet, no less. A music event he has attended – and dominated – for many years and no doubt feels completely at home at.
It was unmistakably Kanye’s turf, and so, her nudity didn’t as much feel shocking as it felt saddening. The ultimate symbol of the very distinct power imbalance in their highly public relationship.
