Veteran Hollywood star spotted helping battle Los Angeles wildfire

The very well-known star has popped up on TV in LA while helping crews battle devastating wildfires.

Actor Steve Guttenberg is helping fire crews as they battle a raging brush fire in the Pacific Palisades neighbourhood of Los Angeles.

Known for his roles in movies like Police Academy, It Takes Two and Three Men and a Baby, Guttenberg, 66, was caught by local news station KTLA 5 on Tuesday as he was out moving cars to make room for fire trucks to drive into the endangered community.

Guttenberg spotted newsman Gene Kang as he reported live on KTLA’s noon broadcast and interjected to share an “important announcement”, reports the New York Post.

“If anybody has a car and they leave the car, leave the keys in the car so that we can move your car so that these firetrucks can get to Palisades Drive,” he implored.

“What’s happening is people take their keys with them as if they’re in a parking lot. This is not a parking lot.”

He continued, “We really need people to move their cars. So if you leave your car behind, leave the key in there so a guy like me can move your car so that these fire trucks can get up there.”

“It’s really, really important,” he told Kang, who didn’t recognise him at first.

Guttenberg, who lives in the area, also shared that he has friends who are under an evacuation order yet are unable to leave because of the traffic jam on Palisades Drive.

“There are people stuck up there. So we’re trying to clear Palisades Drive and I’m walking up there as far as I can moving cars,” he said as he pointed to the hill behind him.

Visibly emotional, he added, “There are families up there, there are pets up there. There are people who really need help.”

He’s also known for his role in Police Academy.

The brush fire threatening the Pacific Palisades was first reported Tuesday morning after dangerous winds began sweeping through Los Angeles.

“We got huge winds right now. It’s really important for people to help each other,” Guttenberg said amid clouds of smoke and the flashing lights of emergency vehicles.

“It’s really important for everybody to band together.”

The star also urged people to not worry about their personal property.

“Just get out,” he begged as burning debris poured down around him. “Get your loved ones and get out.”

As of Tuesday afternoon, the Palisades fire had burned 1,262 acres and several homes and has zero containment, according to CalFire.

A red flag warning from the National Weather Service was issued on Monday and is in effect until Wednesday for much of Southern California.

Local officials have told all Pacific Palisades residents to “evacuate now.”

Parts of Malibu are also under an evacuation order.

Actor James Woods is among the evacuees.
