Irish singer Hozier has pleaded with fans to stop harassing his girlfriend, Hana Mayeda.
The 34-year-old musician took to Instagram to put an end to “insensitive and disrespectful” remarks being left on Mayeda’s social media ever since they were first linked in July 2023.
Although the Take Me To Church singer has remained coy about their relationship this entire time, he all but confirmed they were indeed an item when he defended the 37-year-old American model on Instagram this week in an attempt to end the trolling.
In doing so, Hozier – real name Andrew John Hozier-Byrne – also clarified that his hit song July, released last year, was about lockdown and not about Mayeda like many trolls had suspected.
“Hi guys, Andrew here. the guy who wrote that song! It’s about waiting for lockdown to end,” he began in the since-deleted comment.
“Now that’s out of the way, it’d feel really good if you could refrain from carrying out a conversation like this on my gf’s personal page. It’s entirely baseless, and feels as insensitive and disrespectful as it would for anyone else.
“I cherish the privacy we aim to keep for ourselves and I hope you can support that. Thank you.”
It seems fans have been receptive to Hozier’s pleas. After his comment, Mayeda posted a thank you to her followers for showing “kindness”.
“Hi all. Hana here. Just a note to say thank you for all of your kindness and decency online,” she wrote on her phone’s Notes app which she posted on Instagram Stories.
“It’s been very much appreciated.”
Hozier’s deleted comment was left on a post Mayeda had shared in July 2023 of her trip to Italy. The model has since disabled the comments section of this post as well.
“Unexpected magic in Italy,” she captioned a carousel of photos at the time.
One pic in particular grabbed the attention of her followers who were convinced it featured Hozier. The man’s face was hidden but Mayeda could be seen grabbing his head as she kissed him
“Is that hozier in slide 3?” most fans asked in the comments section.
In an interview last year, Hozier admitted that being on the road touring was a “challenge” when in a relationship.
“I have huge admiration for artists who have families,” he told music magazine Hot Press last September.
“It’s hard managing your time and having the energy to put into relationships when the energy you’re expending through the course of the day is intense. It’s just a very demanding job.”
