Crown Prince Christian of Denmark is serving as regent after his Australian born mother Queen Mary and his father King Frederik extended their overseas jaunt for a second time.
According to Danish tabloid Billed Bladet, the royals were meant to head home on July 13 but were having so much fun abroad they decided to extend the trip not once but twice now announcing they will finally settle in their summer residence, Gråsten Palace, by July 28.
When a head of state is physically out of the country, they must appoint someone to serve in their absence.
While Fred’s mother Queen Margrethe served as regent for some of the trip, it’s a big responsibility being head of state – especially given the 85-year-old Queen chose to abdicate for a well earned rest after an extraordinary 52 year reign.
So that’s where 19-year-old Crown Prince Christian stepped in to help ahead of his plans to begin his Lieutenant’s training course in August after joining the military following his high school graduation.
Christian has been entitled to serve as regent since November 2023 when he made a solemn declaration to abide by the Danish Constitution at a Council of State meeting
The Danish palace has not disclosed the location of Fred and Mary’s private holiday but due to the length of the break, some media outlets are speculating they may have gone to Australia.
Frederik was seen at Wimbledon briefly last week where he was a guest of the British Royal Box.
Queen Mary often returns to her Australian homeland where she last visited unannounced in February where to the delight of locals she popped up at Hobart’s Salamanca Market.
Crown Prince Christian’s big promotion came after news his sister Princess Isabella of Denmark is weighing up a move to Australia, where her mum Queen Mary was born.
Isabella, who recently marked her milestone 18th birthday, is the elder daughter of King Frederik and Aussie-born Queen Mary.
The Princess considering moving to Australia to study or enjoy a gap year before commencing royal duties and completing military service, according to Danish tabloid Billed Bladet.
“There may be a possibility that Princess Isabella will follow in her mother’s footsteps,” the royal magazine revealed.
Isabella is well acquainted with Australia, particularly Tasmania, after enjoying many family holidays on the island where her mother was born.
Her cousin, Count Nikolai of Monpezat, also studied for a semester at the University of Technology Sydney in 2023.
It comes just months after another royal confirmed their move to Australia, with Norway’s Princess Ingrid Alexandra travelling down under in August to begin a three-year undergraduate degree at the University of Sydney.
“Her Royal Highness Princess Ingrid Alexandra will begin her studies at the University of Sydney in August, enrolling in a Bachelor of Arts program,” the Norwegian Palace said in a press release in May.
Isabella would join a long list of royals who have studied in Australia such as Thailand’s reigning King Vajiralongkorn who spent several years studying in Australia in the 1970s, as well as King Charles who spent two terms at Geelong Grammar School in 1966.
Isabella was praised in the Danish press for her first major public speech during her birthday celebrations where the young royal wasn’t afraid to start by cracking a joke.
“Princess Isabella shows great initiative by starting her very first official speech with a joke,” Danish publication BT’s entertainment editor Fie West said.
“She speaks into something that many Danes remember and have brought a smile to their faces, and it is extremely charming that she displays self-irony.”
