Queen Mary and King Frederik of Denmark step out together for Queen Margrethe’ 84th birthday

The Danish monarchs were seen side-by-side for a family occasion, their first public appearance together in weeks.

Queen Mary and King Frederik joined Queen Margrethe in Fredensborg, Denmark ahead of her birthday celebrations, their first public appearance together in weeks.

The royal couple, Queen Margrethe and her sister, Princess Benedikte, posed outside the door of the royal residence alongside Margrethe’s pet Dachsund, Tilia.

Mary, Frederik and Benedikte wore matching shades of blue and celebrated privately at Fredensborg Castle, where royal weddings, anniversaries and birthdays are traditionally held.

It comes after Mary, 52, and Frederik, 55, appeared to be tense with each other on a family skiing trip to Verbier, Switzerland over the Easter break.

For Margrethe’s birthday, King Frederik was photographed looking smart in a grey plaid suit and bright blue tie with his hands behind his back before waving to the crowd.
Queen Mary, who wore a light blue jacket, kept her hands by her sides before waving, too. She accessorised with the Jubilee Piece, a celebration of the 50-year reign of Her Majesty the Queen of Denmark, designed by Georg Jensen.

The couple, who ascended to the Danish throne in January, stood next to each other and wore subdued smiles, while Margrethe and Benedikte smiled delightedly at royal fans.

In November last year, photos of Crown Prince Frederick on an evening out in Madrid with Mexican celebrity Genoveva Casanova, 47, sent rumours into overdrive.

Casanova released a statement denying any kind of romantic relationship between herself and the royal.

Recently, Queen Mary has been seen performing royal duties without her husband and the posts on the official royal family Instagram account suggest they have separate schedules.

On April 3, the mother-of-four attended the 75th anniversary of the Home Guard’s establishment at the Freedom Museum in Copenhagen, and four days later she attended the opening of a deer park.

On April 9, Queen Mary attended a charity conference in Copenhagen without her husband.

On 16 April on Instagram King Frederik addressed the fire in the historic Copenhagen stock exchange, posting “The Queen and I would like to thank all those who, since early this morning, have ensured that no one has been injured, and who have fought to save as much as possible of both the building as well as the many cultural treasures and works of art that Borsen contains.”

The royal couple have four children: Crown Prince Christian, 18, Princess Isabella, 16, and 13-year-old twins, Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine.
