Queen Mary and King Frederik attend memorial service for fallen Danish soldiers

Australian-born Queen Mary stepped out in a midi dress and statement hat for a major date on Denmark’s calendar. See photos.

Queen Mary was a picture of elegance as she led a memorial service for Denmark’s soldiers.

The 52-year-old Australian-born royal stepped out in a black midi dress with puffy sleeves, a statement hat and nude slingback pumps to honour the Danish Armed Forces on National Flag Day.

The Queen complemented her outfit with a large pearl necklace, matching bracelet and stud earrings as well as gold Cartier Love bracelets.

King Frederik, 56, dressed in military regalia, appeared deeply moved as he and Mary placed a wreath at the Monument for Denmark’s International Effort since 1948 in Kastellet, Copenhagen.

Despite the solemn occasion, the monarch shared a smile with his wife while sitting beside her during the service.

Later, Holmens Church provided the setting for a memorial service in honour of Danish soldiers who have fallen in international service.

Flag Day on September 5 was first observed in 2009 to honour those who are or have been deployed on a mission for Denmark.

It comes as the royal couple recently farewelled their eldest son and heir to the throne, Prince Christian.

The 18-year-old moved to East Africa, where he will stay until December to gain experience in farm work and pursue “deeper learning.”

Mary, a devoted mother-of-four, confessed that it will be very challenging to be without their son for the next few months.

“We are going to miss him unimaginably … very, very much,” she said while attending a ceremony in Copenhagen.

She added that both she and King Frederik are excited for him, however, they “look forward” to hearing about his travels upon his return.

Christian is following in the footsteps of his father and his grandmother, Queen Margrethe.

According to a palace spokesperson, it is a tradition for Danish royals who are in line for the throne to spend considerable time abroad during their youth to broaden their understanding of the world.
