Australia’s Princess Mary has made a stunning appearance during celebrations for Queen Margrethe’s 83rd birthday in Copenhagen.
The Tasmanian-born princess appeared smiling on the balcony of the Amalienborg Palace in Copenhagen with her husband, Crown Prince Frederik, and the couple’s four children, Prince Christian, 17, Princess Isabella, 15 and twins Princess Josephine and Prince Vincent, 12, on Sunday local time.
Somewhat surprisingly, they were also joined by Frederik’s brother, Prince Joachim and his family.
The show of family unity comes at a tumultuous time for the Danish royals after Queen Margrethe – who is Europe’s longest-serving monarch – stripped her younger son’s four children of their prince and princess titles – a shocking move which he publicly spoke out against. She has said the decision was intended to allow Nikolai, 23, Felix, 20 – born from Prince Joachim’s first marriage – and Henrik, 13, and Athena, 10, to live normal lives without royal obligations.
At the time, Prince Joachim publicly spoke out against his mother’s decision – claiming that his children had been “harmed” in the process.
It comes as Princess Mary prepares to return to her native Australia in an official capacity for the first time in 10 years.
The 51-year-old will return to her home country on April 28 to meet with Danish representatives that are involved in Australia’s “green transition” while also visiting several Danish-led projects related to sustainability.
Her climate focused trip will begin on April 23 in Vanuatu where she will meet with key people who are managing the reconstruction of the island after it was hit by two cyclones and two earthquakes.
The trip was announced on the Danish Royal’s official Instagram account last Friday.
“Her Royal Highness the Crown Princess will visit the eastern states of Vanuatu and Fiji as well as Australia with Minister for Development Cooperation and Global Climate Policy Dan Jørgensen on the 23rd. -28 April 2023,” the statement read.
“With the trip, the Crown Princess and the minister will focus on the consequences of climate change in the Pacific region.”
Princess Mary’s visit home will be brief, however, as she will be in London for King Charles III’s coronation on May 6.
The last time Princess Mary was in Australia was last Christmas when she visited her family in Tasmania, but the trip was not in any official capacity.
The princess returned to Hobart with her husband and their four children, with the family also spending time on Sydney’s northern beaches.
The Danish royal family’s Christmas holiday was their first time in Australia in more than five years, however Princess Mary was seen in Melbourne last March, where she visited close friend and bridesmaid, Amber Petty.
Princess Mary and Prince Frederick’s last official visit to Australia was in October 2013 where the couple visited the Sydney Opera House to celebrate the iconic landmark’s 40th anniversary.
