Meghan Markle has expanded on the challenges facing female chief executives, including what she called a “guilt mentality” over having a lot of money.
The Duchess of Sussex spoke candidly to Spanx founder and friend Sara Blakely about her “mindset on money” on the final episode of the Confessions of a Female Founder podcast.
“There’s lots of guilt mentality surrounding having a lot. And at the same time, there’s a scarcity mindset,” Meghan said.
“It’s easy to attach to (the idea) of, like, ‘I’ll never have enough,’” she continued, adding that she would “love to have” a healthier mindset about money.
Meghan and husband Prince Harry, notably, have an estimated combined net worth of $A93.5million.
Meghan said women especially “were taught to not even talk about money”.
“It wasn’t until the 70s that women could even have a credit card, a line of credit on a credit card without her husband.”
Meghan also opened up about motherhood to Ms Blakley, who has created a sneaker high heel hybrid, called Sneex.
Expressing her praise for Ms Blakley, Meghan described the difficulties of trying to start a successful company while caring for young children.
Meghan told her: “The amount of what you have created, evolved through the level of what you have done while having this many children, all at that age. It’s something that I think people often forget.”
Discussing her own experiences, Meghan added: “People forget that Lili is three, and Archie is five. So you look at the past five, six years of my life, it’s yes, with being pregnant or with a newborn or with a toddler, and then another one.”
Meghan also praised Ms Blakey’s new range of comfortable high heels, telling how she suffered pain from wearing “five-inch pointy toed stilettos” to various events when she was still a working royal and pregnant with son Archie.
“A friend just said to me the other day, they were like, ‘I just saw this picture I’d forgotten about when you were so pregnant with Archie,’” Meghan said.
“I mean, I gained 65 pounds (30 kilograms) with both pregnancies. You have the most enormous bump, and your tiny little ankles are bracing themselves in these high heels, but all of my weight was in the front, so you’re just going how on earth am I not just tipping, you know faceplanting.
“I was clinging very closely to my husband, I was like please don’t let me fall.”
It came as Meghan hinted she might not restock her sold-out As Ever products, revealing she wants to “step back” to assess her lifestyle brand.
In an interview with US business magazine Fast Company, the Duchess of Sussex said her famed jam might not be restocked straight away as she wanted to “gather data from the launch, and figure out exactly what As Ever could be”.
New products for As Ever are planned to be announced during the first quarter of 2026.
“I want to really focus on the hospitality angle of As Ever, but as we take the learnings, we can understand what the customer’s needs are seasonally,” Meghan said.
“My heart is very deeply in my home. Everything comes from being rooted in the love story of your home and garden, and then you can imagine different verticals coming out of that.”
Meghan also revealed the surprising turn As Ever could take, saying there could be a future venture into the fashion industry.
“The category of fashion is something I will explore at a later date, because I do think that’s an interesting space for me,” she said.
When the Duchess of Sussex launched her As Ever products, including her jam, honey and flower sprinkles earlier this year, they sold out in just over 30 minutes.
Meghan also said that she wouldn’t know “what to call herself” if she had to write a resume.
She said: “If I had to write a resumé, I don’t know what I would call myself. ‘I think it speaks to this chapter many of us find ourselves in, where none of us are one note. But I believe all the notes I am playing are part of the same song.’
