Meghan Markle and Princess Diana married for same reason and will end in same bitterness: Expert

Meghan Markle and Princess Diana married for the same reason and their attempts to change the monarchy ended “bitterly”. See why.

The late Princess Diana and Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex both married for ambition and their determined battles to change the conservative British monarchy ended similarly “bitterly,” a royal expert has said.

“Two ambitious women, one an under aged virgin, the last under aged virgin available in the British aristocracy, apparently, with no education, the other an actress, both married for ambition but Diana’s marriage was understandable,” said Professor Jean Seaton, from London think tank the Constitution Unit.

“There was no racism in Britain when Meghan Markle got married, she was totally embraced, no one could have been happier than the British at her wedding.

“Meghan Markle has monetised her power and position after deciding not to be a working royal.

“She thought she was going to get fame. But royals work hard, they spend their entire time in Aberdeen in nursery schools, that’s too boring if you’re Meghan Markle.

“Both she and Princess Diana tried to change the monarchy and it ended bitterly. The monarchy is slow to change, things take time to move behind the palace walls.”

In the report UK in A Changing Europe published on Tuesday, Ms Seaton, professor of media and history at the London University of Westminster, analyses how royals use fashion as a vehicle for communicating messages and making space to gain attention for significant matters.

“It captures attention and makes a space, they don‘t dress for themselves, they dress for the occasion,” she said.

“It’s about communicating power, nationhood, authority and solidarity.”

“They don‘t dress for themselves and also, how thin do you have to be to be a modern royal?

“Cate is really thin because she’s having a battle for attention and does not want to be fat shamed,” she said.

“Meghan’s engagement showed she had no respect for us, she wore this amazingly expensive dress, you don‘t do that as a royal, it’s just an engagement.”

“No one would pay any attention to Meghan Markle if she hadn’t married a royal. She wears Givenchy. Royals don’t wear Givenchy, they wear British fashion.”

Over the years the monarchy has been feminised and has become an emotional intuition that shapes public opinion and gathers attention.

When President Trump came to the UK, the Queen dazzled in diamonds, and laid on lines of scarlet uniformed guardsmen to impress, the report says.

“She could not express her own views, but sometimes she eloquently let the dress do the talking,” Professor Seaton writes in the report.

“When Trump came to tea, she wore a brooch given to her by his predecessor Barack Obama, whom she is known to have liked. And as the UK left the EU, her majesty wore a fine blue hat adorned with yellow roses,” said professor Seaton, whose report was published this week.

“A good dress is an indisputable win, the Queen dressed in the beginning to define herself against men early on.

“The lessons from Princess Diana and indeed from Meghan Markle is you can set up an alternative court but in the end it collapses in bitterness.”
