Robert De Niro’s heartbroken daughter has revealed the cause of her teenage son’s death after he was found unresponsive.

Leandro De Niro Rodriguez was found dead in a Lower Manhattan apartment by a friend who was doing a wellness check on the young actor, according to TMZ.

His grieving mother Drena claimed on Instagram that someone sold her beloved son fentanyl-laced pills that were tainted, causing his death last week.

“Someone sold him fentanyl laced pills that they knew were laced yet still sold them to him,” she said.

“For all these people still f–king around selling and buying this s–t, my son is gone forever.”

Meanwhile, legendary actor De Niro, 79, issued a statement to the New York Post’s Page Six hours after his daughter Drena announced the death of her 19-year-old son in an emotional Instagram post.

“I’m deeply distressed by the passing of my beloved grandson Leo,” said the eight-time Oscar winner through a spokesperson.

“We’re greatly appreciative of the condolences from everyone. We ask that we please be given privacy to grieve our loss of Leo.”

Leandro’s lifeless body was found sitting in a chair beside white powder inside a one-bedroom apartment in the Cipriani Club Residences on Wall Street, New York.

However, his cause of death is yet to be confirmed.

De Niro Rodriguez appeared in 2018’s A Star Is Born and was the son of De Niro’s adopted daughter Drena and Carlos Rodriguez.

The Hollywood star adopted Drena after marrying her mother, actress Diahnne Abbott in 1976.

Ms Rodriguez shared a loving tribute to her son on social media on Monday.

“My beautiful sweet angel. I have loved you beyond words or description from the moment I felt you in my belly,” her Instagram post read.

“You have been my joy my heart and all that was ever pure and real in my life. I wish I was with you right now. I wish I was with you.

“I don’t know how to live without you but I’ll try to go on and spread the love and light that you so made me feel in getting to be your mama.

“You were so deeply loved and appreciated and I wish that love alone could have saved you. I’m so sorry my baby, I’m so sorry @carlosmare [her husband Carlos’ Instagram handle]. Rest in Peace and Eternal Paradise my darling boy.”

Aside from A Star Is Born, Leandro also appeared in 2005’s The Collection and 2018’s Cabaret Maxime.
