Lily Allen has revealed she returned her new puppy after it ate her passport.
The British singer, 39, made the eyebrow-raising confession on the latest episode of her Miss Me? podcast, which she co-hosts with friend Miquita Oliver.
While Allen didn’t name the dog, she previously adopted a black pup named Mary from the New York-based non-profit shelter Animal Haven in May 2021 with her husband, Stranger Things actor David Harbour.
At the time, Allen took to her social media account to announce the new addition to her family, telling fans she’d created an Instagram page for Mary where “you’ll be seeing a lot more of her.” That post has since been deleted.
Over on Mary’s account, @its_marys_world, Allen uploaded 10 photos in the space of six days before the account went dormant from May 6.
Now, Allen has confessed what happened to Mary.
“[She] ate my passport and so I took her back to the home,” Allen confessed to fill-in co-host Steve Jones.
“She ate all three of our passports and they had our visas in, and I cannot tell you how much money it cost me to get everything replaced, because it was in Covid and so it was just an absolute logistical nightmare.
“And because the father of my children lives in England, I couldn’t take them back to see their dad for like four months, five months, because this f***ing dog had eaten the passports.
“And I just couldn’t look at her. I was like ‘you’ve ruined my life’.”
Allen, who lives in New York with Harbour, shares two daughters Ethel, 13, and Marnie, 11, with her ex-husband, UK builder Sam Cooper.
Because Mary also ate Ethel and Marnie’s passports, the pair weren’t able to see their father for several months.
The admission came after Allen revealed her plans to get another dog, which she’s pre-named Jude Bellingham.
Fans have since hit out at The Fear singer for her “horrible” move to return the dog to a shelter, with many flooding the comment section of Mary’s dedicated Instagram account.
“Shameful. You and your family shouldn’t be allowed to have any other pets,” one wrote.
“This poor puppy obviously had separation anxiety … How incredibly ridiculous of you to reach the way you did! A puppy is a baby, it’s your responsibility to puppy proof and keep important documents in a safe place!!” another said.
“Justice for Mary,” a third said.
“This poor puppy did not deserve to be returned to a shelter by a multi-millionaire,” a fourth added.
“Chewing, teething, and being naughty comes with the territory of adopting a young puppy. @lilyallen you sick,” the comment continued.
Backlash has also exploded over on X, with one fan writing, “Lily Allen is all that’s wrong with the world, got a puppy, used it for likes on instagram and then sent it back to the home because it chewed up her family passports that she left within its reach. Hopefully this pup found someone who deserves her.”
“I’ve gone right off Lily Allen now,” another stated.
Allen is yet to comment.
