Chris Hemsworth has featured in a star-studded ad for a new mobile game, leaving some of his fans scratching their heads.

The Australian actor, who is among the world’s highest paid movie stars, fronts a five-minute long promo for game development company Supercell’s newest free-to-play game, Squad Busters.

Appearing alongside fellow screen stars including Christina Ricci, Ken Joeng, Will Arnett and Dolph Lundgren, the actors are all dressed as life-size versions of the characters that feature in the game, which was produced by the same developers behind 2012’s Clash of Clans.

Hemsworth portrays the character ‘Barbarian King’, which bears a resemblance to his iconic Marvel character, Thor.

In the ad, the A-list group are seen rallying a potential player to get out of bed and switch into gaming gear. “Come on, get up,” Hemsworth says.

“We’re here to make your life more fun,” Ricci adds.

They then follow the gamer through his normal daily routine in a series of comedic scenes, including tagging along with him to a job interview and propping him up to the boss.

“Your sword play, tell him about your sword play,” Hemsworth says. “He’s also pillaged a few villages,” he adds.

Fans took to social media baffled by how the Finnish gaming company managed to lure such high-profile talent for its ad.

“Just seen an ad, for a FREE game I’ve never heard of, featuring Chris Hemsworth, Ken Jeong (Hangover/Community), Christina Ricci. Mobile gaming companies must make a minting off in-app purchases,” one user wrote on X.

“How the f**k did they get Chris Hemsworth to star in this ad,” another questioned.

“Did I just see a mobile game ad with Chris Hemsworth and Ken Jeong,” a third wrote.

“Getting Chris Hemsworth in a supercell game ad is crazy as hell,” another chimed in.

Others, however, applauded the “hilarious” promo, with many saying it prompted them to download the game.

“Just came across this SquadBusters ad and it’s better than most films released recently,” one said.

“I’m not gonna lie, the ad with Chris Hemsworth for Squad Busters totally made me download the game today and I’m having a blast,” another wrote.

“Brilliant ad. Chris Hemsworth is underrated. This game is actually fun as f#ck,” a third wrote.

It comes as Hemsworth hit the big screen for his latest blockbuster Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, Australian director George Miller’s fifth film in the franchise.

While it’s received favourable critical reviews, with a 90 per cent positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the film has proved slow-going at the box office in the two weeks since it’s release.

As of June 4, it’s grossed $US116 million at the global box office against a budget of $US168 million.
