Australian comedian Chris Lilley’s latest social media posts have fans in a frenzy, wondering if one of his most beloved characters is about to come out of hibernation.
Lilley, 50, today posted two mysterious videos to his social media accounts. The short videos feature a large pink fit ball, and a distinctive figure dancing across the screen.
It could only be one character: Mr G, the drama teacher Lilley portrayed in the 2007 series Summer Heights High.
Along with schoolgirl Ja’mie King, Mr G is perhaps Lilley’s best-loved comic creation.
Fans are going wild under the posts, begging Lilley to confirm that Mr G was returning in some shape or form.
“Oh my god you’re literally kidding please tell me this isn’t a prank,” wrote one.
“Welcome back to Mr G’s room???? Please,” another begged.
“I can’t believe I’ve waited over 15 years for this and it’s REALLY HAPPENING,” said another.
Once a fixture of Australian television, Lilley has largely been absent from screens for the five years since his last project, the 2019 Netflix series Lunatics.
The following year, the streaming giant pulled a number of Lilley’s earlier shows from its platform, amid controversy about his past portrayal of several characters of different races, including Asian theatre buff Ricky Wong, African-American rapper S.Mouse and Tongan student Jonah Takalua.
As controversy raged, Lilley moved into the world of podcasting, launching audio shows as the characters Jana Melhoopen-Jonks (2020’s Jana’s Yard) and Ja’mie King (2021’s Ja’miezing 2021).
Today’s Mr G-themed video teasers also feature an office chair, suggesting the high school drama teacher might also be reborn as a podcast host.
Lilley has also launched a surprising sideline career in recent months: amateur nature documentarian.
The comedian shares detailed videos on his social media channels of his many wildlife encounters as he travels around Australia.
