BRYAN Adams is determined not to do a Meat Loaf at next weekend’s AFL Grand Final.
The Canadian rocker, whose hits include Summer Of ‘69, Run To Youand Everything I Do (I Do It For You) will headline the pregame show on Saturday along with English singer-songwriter Ellie Goulding as well as playing a free gig for all comers on the MCG turf after the Grand Final.
Adams is used to playing to huge crowds at festivals and outdoor gigs, including the opening of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. But on hearing about the disaster that was veteran rocker Meat Loaf during the 2011 AFL Grand Final, he said: “I have done enough of these gigs to know that you just have to pound through it. You just do the best you can — put on plenty of sunscreen, try to sing in tune and away you go.”

Born in Canada and now living in the UK, Adams’ sports of choice are soccer and ice hockey. He has first-hand experience of Aussie rules having watched an AFL game in Adelaide on a previous visit but it wasn’t the skills that caught his attention — it was the swearing.
“I like football, as in soccer, and I go to the games here in the UK, and I like it because there are good songs and plenty of banter,” he said. “But I don’t think I have ever heard swearing like I heard at the Adelaide match. Not that I am a stranger to swearing but I don’t think I had ever heard it with such conviction. But it’s great fun and I am looking forward to seeing the whole thing — it’s going to be spectacular.”
Adams, who releases new album Get Up on Friday, will return for a tour of arenas and wineries next March, with tickets on sale October 8.
Australia has long been a happy hunting ground for the singer, whose Grammy-winning hit Everthing I Do (I Do It For You), spent a then record 11 weeks at No. 1 in 1991.
“I love coming to Australia I have done so many shows over the years and had some really good times over all,” he said.
Bryan Adams plays Bimbadgen Winery, Hunter Valley, March 12; Sirromet Wines, Mt Cotton, March 13; Allphones Arena, Sydney, March 16; Rod Laver Arena, March 18; Leconfield Wines, McLaren Vale, March 19 and Kings Park & Botanic Gardens, Perth, March 21.
