How did this happen? How could two of the biggest red carpets collide in a blurred vision of frills, sequins and spray tans for arguably the most fashionable 12 hours of the year?
From floral to feathered, lacy to racy both the Emmy Awards, which celebrates the year’s achievements on the small box, and the Brownlow, which honours the best and fairest player in the AFL — and gives the wives and partners of the players a chance to showcase the best in local design talent — gave fashion watchers plenty of trends to talk about.
Here we compare the standouts to see if football’s night of nights stacks up stylishly against the Tinseltown A-listers.
Charles Brownlow: the story of the man behind the medal
THE FROZEN DRESS
We all love a Disney Princess moment and it couldn’t have been a better choice for Nadia Bartel. With all eyes destined to be on the newly single Bartel, she made it worth everyone’s while with this graceful design by Melbourne duo J’Aton. Also opting for an ice-blue gown with a billowing skirt with subtle texture was comedy star Brittany Snow. But Bartel’s elegance and class was unrivalled.

INDIVIDUALITY
Neither Game of Thrones star Gwendolin Christie and Hester Brown, wife of North Melbourne star Ben Brown, subscribe to the sartorial stereotypes of a red carpet. Instead, they channel their own individual style to striking effect. And for that they are both red carpet winners adding interest to, an at-times, cookie-cutter affair.

LEG SPLITS
There were pins aplenty on both red carpets, peeking out from behind layers of fabric and frothy tulle. But these were two of the standouts. Tinseltown veteran Marissa Tomei in the rich colour combo of the night, and Jessie Murphy in eye-catching white. Both even capped off their toe points in shiny metallics. It’s a tough call but Tomei can’t be faulted.

NAVY PLUNGING NECKLINES
GoT’s mother of dragons Emilia Clarke turned heads on the Emmy’s red carpet in a daring, naval-plunging neckline while back in Melbourne, all eyes were on Geelong mother, Emma Hawkins who stole the spotlight in a tuxedo-style gown. Hawkins’ Oglia Loro gown seemed more skin-to-fabric proportionate thanks to the tailored sleeves.

BLACK LATEX
Neither looked comfortable, but both were undeniably eye-catching.
While Kate Turner, partner of Essendon’s Dyson Heppell opted for the full Catwoman-does-black-tie look, Kendall Jenner layered an edgy latex turtleneck under a feminine floral-print Richard Quinn gown. The juxtaposition was equal parts surprising and striking.

PASTELS
Stars at the Emmy Awards, including Regina King and Jameela Jamil, may have opted for the baby blues, but it was a lavender dream in Melbourne with a parade of powdery purples on display. Both shades are on trend this spring/summer, but purple seems slightly more current.

STATEMENT BOWS
Adorable, ladylike and incredibly chic, it’s no wonder bows are becoming one of the most popular embellishments on red carpet gowns. While delicate shoulder loops and bolder belt bows were all popular, it was a case of the bigger the better for two standouts. While actor Natasha Lyonne channelled Dynasty in a shimmering gold pussy bow, Ruby Ward opted for an oversized metallic bow at the back, and the ultimate accessory — a baby bump — at the front.

FEATHERS
Halsey took flight in an elegant ombre gown which featured a tricking train of purple feathers while Hannah Davis went for a similar approach in her train with white ostrich feathers by Cappellazzo Couture. Davis’ silhouette seemed to create a more sophisticated outcome however.

VELVET JACKETS
On both accounts, the boys played it fairly straight in their black tuxedos, but honourable mentions go to these two. Former teen heart-throb from the creek, James Van Der Beek looked sophisticated in a musky shade of pink, pairing his trousers with textured suede loafers while Patrick Dangerfield teamed with his wife Mardi’s theme in a rich burgundy shade. And in fairness, was more in keeping with the black tie dress code.

GREEN
Greta Lee brightened up the Emmy’s red carpet in a two-piece lime green outfit by Christopher John Rogers, while news reporter Madeleine Slattery also opted for a similar zesty shade of green in a ruffled design by Con Ilio. While both embraced the citrus hue tipped to be on trend come summer, we prefer there to be no belly baring at a black-tie affair.
