Coleman was working at Sydney’s Cruising Yacht Club of Australia in February 2005, not long after King Frederik X and his Australian-born wife, Queen Mary, had married.
The then Prince Frederik visited the yacht club with some friends and got caught in a non-smoking area lighting up.
“They were all smoking so then the guy, the manager was like, ‘Someone needs to go out and tell them not to smoke,’ and I was like, ‘I am not telling them they can’t smoke!’,” Coleman said on her radio show. .
“We came back into the kitchen, and everyone is like, ‘You know who that is!?’”
Coleman described how the young royal had kept his entourage’s visit low-key, and that staff and patrons were not bothered by the group’s presence.
“I said, ‘Do you guys mind if you just move down to the steps.’,” she said.
“They were so polite, ‘Yeah yeah of course, we didn’t realise!
“A week later we had to have security checks, we to sign in, we had police come, we had everyone come to survey the place, make sure that it was all okay because then Mary was coming in.
“He (King Frederik) was going out there sailing and he had been sailing out there all week, no one made a big fuss whatsoever and then she was coming down. There was crowds all there and she was just coming to greet him off the boat.”
King Frederik and Queen Mary were crowned the new monarchs of Denmark on Sunday afternoon making Mary the first Australian-born citizen to be crowned a European royal.
