THE Brisbane Festival’s highly-anticipated Fire Gardens event has been abruptly cancelled after Brisbane’s fire ban was extended.
The event, which had originally been scheduled to run this week, was postponed to instead begin Monday due to a fire ban.
But organisers were tonight forced to cancel the event after a Queensland Fire and Emergency Services fire ban was extended until Friday (September 20).
Organisers have contacted ticket holders this evening notifying them of the decision.
“The extension of the ban into next week means Fire Gardens can no longer proceed as the event’s visiting international team of artists is unable to extend their Australian stay further due to existing international touring commitments,” the statement said.
“Brisbane Festival is responsive to community concerns and sensitive to the anguish of those who have lost their homes and livelihoods in the fires.
“Our thoughts are with our fellow Queenslanders affected by the bushfires.”
Organisers said ticket holders would receive a full refund but that due to the large volume of tickets sold, refunds could take up to 14 business days.
The Fire Gardens were to be held as part of the Brisbane Festival with fiery displays including fire sculptures and leaping flames.
