Just as they were about to put up the sold out sign the stage version of Trent Dalton’s Boy Swallows Universe has been extended for another week.
Tickets for the sixth and final week of the play will go on sale Tuesday at 9am and there is expected to be a rush by fans who have missed out.
The play, an adaptation of Dalton’s bestseller by Tim McGarry, directed by Sam Strong, is a co-presentation between Brisbane Festival, QPAC and Queensland Theatre.
It is Queensland Theatre’s biggest selling show in its 50-year-plus history and though the figures aren’t in yet a spokesman for QPAC says it’s also one of its biggest-selling shows. Around 80 per cent of tickets sold out before the first preview.
And with the show now sold out the news that it’s now on for another week will be welcomed by fans. In fact people will be ecstatic. Trent Dalton is thrilled.
“It’s the people of Brisbane who have made this happen,” Dalton says.
“The poster says Trent Dalton’s Boy Swallows Universe but that’s a bunch of contractual nonsense. This play belongs to Brisbane. From Darra to Bracken Ridge and everywhere in between. It’s this city that made this play work and it’s this city that made my dreams come true. What a glorious flipping town this is.”
The play, a two-and-three-quarter-hour epic, has been the talk of the town since opening night, a glittering affair attended by all the glitterati including superstar director Baz Luhrmann and his daughter Lillian. It’s a gritty but heartwarming coming of age tale set in Brisbane and a hugely entertaining few hours in the theatre.
One thing people weren’t expecting was the killer ‘80s soundtrack which showcases some great music including the punk classic (I’m) Stranded by The Saints.
The cast is terrific with Joe Klocek as Eli Bell and it’s clear that this young Brisbane actor who starred in the film The Dry could be the next big thing on the Australian stage and screen.
Boy Swallows Universe has been extended in the Playhouse, QPAC until October 9 and tickets go on sale at 9am Tuesday September 14. qpac.com.au
