The Brisbane-based adaptation of the hugely popular novel has made a meteoric rise to the top of Netflix’s global charts in its first week.

In a remarkable feat for a Brisbane-based production, the Netflix adaptation of Trent Dalton’s best-selling novel Boy Swallows Universe has soared into the Top 5 on Netflix’s global charts in its very first week.

Released on January 11, the series - adapted from the acclaimed Trent Dalton novel of the same name - has already garnered a staggering 3.6 million views worldwide, from January 8 to January 14, according to Netflix’s viewership weekly list.

The series, which showcases the vibrant city of Brisbane, has not just captivated local audiences but also garnered significant international acclaim, and currently stands as the biggest Australian series made in Queensland.

In just less than four days since its global premiere on January 11, Boy Swallows Universe has achieved what many series take seasons to accomplish.

With the equivalent of over 1.5 times the population of Brisbane tuning in, the show has become a phenomenal success, resonating deeply with audiences globally.

The limited series has made it to the Top 10 in TV lists in 47 countries including the United States, United Kingdom, Brazil, Canada, Germany, France, and Australia.

Significantly, the show’s success is not just in viewership numbers.

The production, supported by Screen Queensland, has been a substantial contributor to the local economy, injecting $34 million during its production.

It also created 185 jobs for cast and crew, and engaged 2500 extras.

Screen Queensland CEO Jacqui Feeney expressed immense pride in the series.

“Screen Queensland is thrilled to see how audiences around the world have been captivated by this most Brisbane of stories,” Ms Feeney said.

“Netflix’s Boy Swallows Universe is an impeccable series, beautifully brought to life by Queensland’s talented creatives, crew, and cast.”

She highlighted the significant support provided by the Queensland Government’s Production Attraction Strategy, lauding the local and international success of the series.

“We are immensely proud to have supported this locally-made series through Queensland Government investment in our Production Attraction Strategy. Congratulations to Netflix, Brouhaha Entertainment, Chapter One, Anonymous Content, and not least, Brisbane’s own Trent Dalton, on the incredible local and international success of Boy Swallows Universe,” Ms Feeney said.
