Captain Jason Chambers from the Cairns based reality TV show Below Deck Down Under has taken to social media to address the termination of two crew members following alleged sexual misconduct.
During the events of episodes six and seven of Season 2, which aired on Monday, filmed in Cairns, crew member Luke Jones was dismissed after a drunken escapade led him to climb into stewardess Margot Sisson’s bed, naked, without her consent.
Another crew member, Laura Bileskalne, was dismissed for her inappropriate reaction and behaviour deemed “borderline sexual harassment” towards deckhand Adam Kodra.
Following growing response from the show’s fanbase, Captain Chambers broke his silence with a heartfelt Instagram video on Thursday morning, praising the production team for their transparent handling of the situation, allowing Chief Stew Aesha Scott to intervene in an authentic manner.
“Hi everybody, I’m sure you’re digesting episode six and seven as I am,” Captain Chambers, 50, said in the clip.
“I’ve had a flood of messages over the last 24 hours from people in similar situations, some not so lucky of the outcome, so my heart goes out to them.
“I like to thank the production team for breaking the fourth wall, and stepping in. Then reforming and allowing Aesha to come to me in an authentic manner and us dealing with it as we would as captain and crew.”
Captain Chambers emphasised the importance of respecting boundaries and urged fans to send “less hate please, more love”.
“Look, this happened over a year ago, and again I’ll stress the people involved are all, hopefully, on a better journey to better themselves,” he said.
While acknowledging the crew’s private lives off the yacht were often a mystery to him, Captain Chambers maintained that the disciplinary action was the right course of action, stressing that as soon as the issue was brought to his attention, he acted promptly and decisively.
“I don’t know what goes on when the crew go out, I am not told,” Captain Chambers explained in his Instagram video.
“But unless a crew member complains of anything – like Adam – I wouldn’t know,” he said.
The captain’s candid response has drawn widespread support, both from fans and colleagues.
Many praised his decisive actions, noting he set the right example.
Captain Sandy Yawn from Below Deck Mediterranean joined the voices praising Captain Chambers and Scott for their handling of the situation, writing “Mad respect” on Captain Chamber’s post.
