American hip hop was served fresh beef at a Grammys after-party when Janelle Monáe put rapper Nelly on blast for performing at President Trump’s inauguration ball.
Monáe, who wowed the awards with her Michael Jackson-inspired performance during the very, very long Quincy Jones tribute, didn’t mince words during a freestyle rap over Nelly’s signature hit Hot in Herre.
The acclaimed singer, dancer and actor let her feelings about Nelly’s support of Trump known when she hit the stage with Anderson Paak to jam with a live band at West Hollywood club Andy’s.
“F… you, Nelly!” she rapped over the Nelly hit. “I used to like Nelly but then he went to perform for Donald Trump.”
As the crowd around her roared, Monáe kept her freestyle going, referencing many of the issues raised on the Grammys stage by award winners including Chappell Roan and Lady Gaga.
“I care about women. I care about Hispanics. I care about Spanish people. I care about Mexicans … I care about gay people,” she rapped.
“I used to think he was cool, but now you look like a motherf…ing fool.”
Monae signed off her spray by owning she “might be a little tipsy but I know everything I’m motherf…ing saying. F... you, Nelly!”
Nelly previously defended his decision to perform at Trump’s ball, saying he wasn’t taking a political side but honouring the office of President.
“I’m not doing this for money,” he said last month. “I’m doing this ’cause it’s an honour. I respect the office.”
There was a surprise guest at the awards who side-stepped getting ensnared in hip hop’s biggest beef du jour.
Drake’s father Dennis Graham played the diplomat when he was asked about Kendrick Lamar winning five Grammys for his controversial diss track Not Like Us.
The Canadian rapper, who is currently touring Australia, is suing the world’s biggest music company, Universal Music Group, for defamation over the song’s lyrics calling him a pedophile.
Drake’s dad, a musician whose fame was boosted by appearing in his son’s music videos, was walking outside the Grammys venue after the awards and responded “I don’t care nothing about that sh..,” as he walked away.
“That ain’t got nothing to do with me. All the best to him, man. I don’t do that bullsh …”
It appeared a lot of the American music community are team Kendrick with everyone from Beyonce to Taylor Swift singing along to Not Like Us as Lamar collected his trophies.
