Silk Sonic and Olivia Rodrigo were among the big winners at today’s Grammy Awards, which also included a “powerful” surprise appearance from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Soul singer Jon Batiste was a surprise winner of the night’s final award, Album of the Year, beating out the likes of Billie Eilish, Kanye West and Taylor Swift, making him the first Black artist to win the coveted award since 2008.
Earlier, stars including a Versace-clad Dua Lipa dazzled on the Grammys red carpet.
And of course there was a healthy smattering of Will Smith jokes during the first award show to be held since the actor’s shocking Oscars smackdown last week.

Host Trevor Noah opened proceedings with a pointed reference to the Oscars: “We’re going to be singing, we’re going to be dancing, we’re going to be keeping people’s names out of our mouths,” he said, giving the camera a wry smile as he paraphrased Smith’s now-infamous words to Chris Rock last week.
Minutes later, musician Questlove took to the stage to present an award. Questlove was the unfortunate winner of the award Chris Rock had been presenting at the Oscars, and had his big moment thoroughly upstaged by Smith. He told the Grammys audience: “I’m going to present this award... and I trust you people stay 500ft away from me.”
The jokes started early in a pre-televised portion of the ceremony, with comedian Nate Bargatze taking to the stage to present an award - wearing an oversized safety helmet.
“They said comedians had to wear these now at award shows, during the joke parts,” Bargatze explained of his get-up.
Elsewhere in the ceremony, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky appeared via videolink to give a message to viewers, begging them not to stay silent about the Russian invasion that’s decimating his country. Zelensky had been rumoured to be making an appearance at last week’s Oscars, but did not appear.
Viewers on Twitter - among them Piers Morgan - praised the President for his “powerful” words:

“Fill the silence with your music. Fill it today to tell our story. Tell the truth about the war on your social networks, on TV, support us in any way you can any, but not silence,” Zelenksy urged.
Zelensky’s message led into a moving performance by singer John Legend, who was joined on stage by several Ukrainian performances.
Rapper Doja Cat delivered one of the night’s most memorable acceptance speeches, racing to the stage from the bathroom to accept the award for Best Pop Duo / Group Performance for her SZA duet, Kiss Me More: “I have never had such a fast piss,” the out-of-breath star announced.
Stars including Lil Nas X, BTS and Billie Eilish have delivered show-stopping performances during the ceremony:
And Eilish’s electric performance of her song Happier Than Ever also came with a sweet tribute to late Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins - she wore a t-shirt emblazoned with Hawkins’ face:
A touchibng tribute to Hawkins also led the night’s In Memoriam segment.
Good 4 U hitmaker Olivia Rodrigo took out several of the night’s biggest awards, including Best Pop Vocal Album and Best New Artist, beating a crowded field including Aussie teen star The Kid Laroi. Two recent Best New Artist winners, Dua Lipa and Megan Thee Stallion, presented the award while wearing matching Versace dresses:
There were only a handful of major awards handed out at today’s televised ceremony, with the majority of gongs already awarded at the pre-event.
