Wearing a strapless belted Armani gown, Nicole Kidman has dazzled at the Critics’ Choice Awards in Los Angeles.
Australian star Kidman walked the blue carpet at The Barker Hanger, which was also attended by JLo, Charlize Theron and Zendaya, who flashed her midriff in a daring fuchsia Tom Ford outfit.
Big winners included Joaquin Phoenix as Best Actor for Joker and Brad Pitt, who was named Best Supporting Actor (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood).
Marriage Story actor Laura Dern beat Margot Robbie (of Bombshell) for Best Supporting Actress, while Renee Zellweger was named Best Actress for Judy.
While it doesn’t have as much style cred as the Golden Globes or Oscars, standout trends at the Critics’ Choice Awards spanned ice queen-style dresses, goth-style black gowns and zesty, citrus hues.
Australian actor Toni Collette won Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series for her role as a tough-talking detective in Netflix miniseries, Unbelievable.
Though in a less fashionable trend of the night, Collette (like many winners) wasn’t on hand to accept her award in person.
Both Robbie – who also was a no-show – and Kidman didn’t win their categories.
Bombshell star Robbie was beaten by Dern for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama, while Regina King, of Watchmen, was named Best Actress in a Drama Series over Big Little Lies actor Kidman.
Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was named Best Picture at the awards, voted on by The Critics Choice Association (CCA).
Phoenix again used his speech to draw attention to the environment. “I’d like to thank the awards for going plant-based and trying to offset our carbon footprint. It’s really amazing message,” Phoenix told the crowd as he was named Best Actor for his leading role in Joker.
The Golden Globe-winner also addressed the movie’s controversial violent subject matter, saying “instead of inciting violence, you (Joker director Todd Phillips) invited the audience in to see what it feels like when you’re one of the forgotten.”
A week on from the Golden Globes, the Critics’ Choice Awards are considered another precursor to the Oscars.
