Aussie star’s touching tribute during Golden Globes speech

An Aussie star who beat out Meryl Streep for a major award made an emotional tribute during her speech.

Elizabeth Debicki made an emotional tribute to her “beloved and dear godmother” as she took home the Golden Globe for her portrayal of Princess Diana.

The Australian star, 33, edged out veteran Meryl Streep, Christina Ricci, J. Smith-Cameron and Hannah Waddingham for the Best Supporting Actress gong on Monday.

Debicki dedicated her win in the Limited Series, Anthology Series or Motion Picture Made for Television category to her godmother.

“I just want say thank you to my beloved and dear godmother who left us too quickly, too soon. This one’s for you, babe,” she said.

The Melbourne native also thanked her “beautiful pretend children” – Ed McVey, Rufus Kampa, Luther Ford and Fflyn Edwards – who portrayed Diana’s sons in the Crown.

Dressed in a champagne Dior couture gown, she also paid tribute to the stars behind the camera.

“Thank you to the creatives of this show for trusting me with this part, to our cast and crew, to my beautiful pretend children,” she said.

She continued, thanking her mum and dad and partner Kristian who was in Australia. Debicki joked she hoped they were in their pyjamas watching.

“He said, don’t thank me so that I’m not on television, but I’m gonna thank you anyway!”

It is the Australian star, 33, first Golden Globe win from her second nomination, which she received for the same role in 2023.

Debicki portrayed Princess Diana in the final two seasons of the hit Netflix series spanning the life of Queen Elizabeth.

The third episode recreated the car crash that killed Princess Diana and Dodi Fayed in Paris in 1997.

Debicki is also nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Performance in a Drama Series, Screen Actors Guild Award and Critics’ Choice Award for the same role.
