The Langham hotel on the Gold Coast became a hub of star-studded excitement as Australia’s finest in film and television gathered for the announcement of the 2024 AACTA Awards nominees.
Often referred to as the ‘Australian Oscars,’ the AACTA Awards will be held on February 10 on the Gold Coast, marking a significant shift, with the awards ceremony set to be hosted in Queensland for the first time next year.
Amid the coastal backdrop, the nomination event was graced by a host of acclaimed actors including Aswan Reid, Wayne Blair, Osamah Sami, Nina Oyama, Zoe Terakes, Celeste Barber, Heather Mitchell, Andrew Winter, Alexander English, and Rob Collins.
In the television category, productions such as “The Newsreader,” “The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart,” “Colin from Accounts,” and “Deadloch” led the nominations. “The Newsreader” was notably distinguished, receiving 15 nominations including for Best Drama Series. “The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart” followed closely with 12 nominations, including for Best Miniseries.
In the film segment, “The New Boy,” starring Cate Blanchett, leads the nominations with 12, closely pursued by “Talk to Me” with 11. The introduction of the Best Acting in a Comedy category highlighted the vibrant nature of Australian comedy, featuring notable performers such as Patrick Brammall, Harriet Dyer, Helen Thomson, Kate Box, Nina Oyama, Kitty Flanagan, Julia Zemiro, and Celeste Barber.
“I’m so excited to be nominated. It’s a dream, it really is, the Australian film and television industry is always the industry that I’ve always wanted to work in,” Barber said.
AACTA CEO Damian Trewhella expressed his excitement for the upcoming events in Queensland, congratulating the nominees for their outstanding achievements.
“Each nomination and achievement stands as a testament to the talent that elevate our nation’s storytelling on the global stage,” he said.
“We’re really thrilled about our new era here in Queensland.”
Complementing the awards this year, the inaugural AACTA Festival, a four-day event, will be held at the Home of the Arts (HOTA) on the Gold Coast.
The festival will showcase over 70 events including panels, screenings, and meet-and-greets, highlighting the diversity and creativity of the Australian screen industry.
Queensland Tourism Minister Stirling Hinchliffe highlighted the importance of hosting the awards, noting, “The eyes of the world will be on the Gold Coast, shining a spotlight on not only the glitter strip but also the stars that light it up.”
Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate echoed these sentiments, emphasising the region’s role as a film and television hub.
“The countdown is on to the 2024 AACTA Awards as we welcome the stars of cinema and television to our city and to our Home of the Arts,” he said.
“Two huge award nights are on our doorstep, and I wish everyone, especially our Gold Coast-affiliated nominees, success come February.”
The Gold Coast mayor added that the city are in the midst of expanding their film production capability.
“We’re already in negotiation to build another 30 Sound Studio up at Yatala,” he said.
The decision to move the AACTA Awards to Queensland, as announced in January by Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk, reflects the state’s increasing stature in the global screen industry.
“I am delighted to announce our deal with the Australian Film Institute to bring the AACTAs to the Gold Coast for the next three years,” she said.
Russell Crowe, President of the Australian Academy (AACTA), also noted the strategic move, saying, “In acknowledgment of Queensland’s growing importance of film and television production in this country, it has been decided by the Board of the Australian Film Institute and AACTA, and with the generous co-operation of the Queensland Government, for the next 3 years we’ll be shifting from Sydney and hosting the AACTA Awards here on the Gold Coast.”
