Hollywood actor Anne Heche is brain dead and “not expected to survive”, after she was involved in a fiery car cash in Los Angeles.

The 53-year-old US actress has been in a coma since the accident last Friday.

In a statement issued by her family and published by People magazine, they said: “Unfortunately, due to her accident, Anne suffered a severe anoxic brain injury and remains in a coma in critical condition. She is not expected to survive.”

Heche’s publicist said she was being kept on life support to “determine if her organs are viable”.

“It has long been her choice to donate her organs,” her publicist said.

Heche’s family expressed their gratitude for the support they have had since she was badly burned.

“We want to thank everyone for their kind wishes and prayers for Anne’s recovery and thank the dedicated staff and wonderful nurses that cared for Anne at the Grossman Burn Center at West Hills hospital,” the statement said.

“Anne had a huge heart and touched everyone she met with her generous spirit. More than her extraordinary talent, she saw spreading kindness and joy as her life’s work — especially moving the needle for acceptance of who you love.

“She will be remembered for her courageous honesty and dearly missed for her light.”

It comes after Heche allegedly took cocaine leading up to a fiery crash that has left her fighting for her life.

Her blood test results came up positive for both cocaine and fentanyl, TMZ reports, citing LAPD sources.

But the police insiders told the publication the fentanyl may have been given to the actress at the hospital to kill the pain after the accident.

A photo taken shortly after the accident of a red-capped bottle in her car’s cup holder sparked reports Heche was under the influence of alcohol. But TMZ reports that was not the case.

The outlet also reports Heche has “not improved” and her condition is “dire.

A spokesperson of Heche issued a statement this week that she remained in an “extreme critical condition”.

“She has a significant pulmonary injury requiring mechanical ventilation and burns that require surgical intervention,” the statement said.

“She is in a coma and has not regained consciousness since shortly after the accident.”

It’s a worsening condition for the 53-year-old Emmy winner, who was previously said to be in a stable condition over the weekend following the crash.

Heche was driving a blue Mini Cooper in Los Angeles’s Mar Vista neighbourhood on Friday local time when the car crashed through a house and erupted in flames.

Doorbell cameras caught the sound of her roaring through quiet residential streets — before slamming into a house, sparking a blaze that took 59 firefighters more than an hour to tackle.
