Footy legend Allan Langer has given Queensland theatre fans a night they won’t forget after performing a rousing rendition of ‘Simply the Best’ at the Tina Turner Musical in Brisbane.
“Alfie” Langer enjoyed a raucous applause when he was welcomed on stage at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre on Thursday night as part of the encore.
The Brisbane Broncos legend held a special bond with the late Turner, having been part of what is regarded as Australian sport’s greatest marketing campaign in the 1990s.
Turner also presented the Winfield Cup to the Broncos after performing at the 1993 grand final.
A Queensland Origin and Kangaroos great regarded as one of the game’s best ever players, Langer said getting up on stage alongside Ruva Ngwenya, who plays Turner in the musical, was the most nervous he has been in his 57 years.
“I’ve never been as nervous as that in my life, even before a rugby league game and I would normally vomit before games,” he said.
“To come out and see Tina (Ngwenya) like that and see the crowd go off with Simply the Best was incredible.
“I’ve seen the show a couple of times. The amount of work and effort they put into it is incredible.
“My best memory was when we held the grand final trophy and Tina was there singing the Broncos song with us. She didn’t know the words but still sung along with us.
“This should still be the anthem of rugby league today. It was wonderful back then and is still wonderful today.”
The Tina Turner Musical performed at last year’s NRL grand final as a tribute to Turner, who died on May 24 last year, aged 83.
Ngwenya will perform the Australian national anthem at Wednesday’s State of Origin series decider at Suncorp Stadium and said it was a special moment having Langer join her on stage.
“It was so special to see the crowd’s reaction when I screamed out ‘Alfie Langer’,” she said.
“The reception was loud, they were roaring for him. To see that love and appreciation they had for him was so beautiful
“It was incredible, so awesome, the crowd went crazy.”
Next Wednesday 17 July, Ngwenya will perform the national anthem at State of Origin – Game 3 in Brisbane.
Curtains opened for Tina - The Tina Turner Musical at QPAC on July 5 and will run until the end of August.
