A TERM three parking blitz will begin on Monday as council cracks down on “hectic” peak hour behaviour in Brisbane school zones.

Documents obtained by The Courier-Mail reveal that Brisbane City Council issued 260 infringement fines, worth tens of thousands of dollars, and another 144 zero value warning notices across semester one.

Of the 260 fines, just 38 – or a mere 17 per cent – were issued in term 2 with Council freezing parking fines for some six weeks amid the crux of the pandemic.

But as schools return to full time onsite learning, Council will launch a parking blitz and parents should be prepared to “feel the full force of the law”.

“In the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, Queensland is slowly returning to some normalcy and … Council will be kicking off parking enforcement across 60 schools, with high visibility vehicles patrolling school zones,” Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner told The Courier-Mail.

“This isn’t just a reminder for parents to be vigilant, we want every motorist travelling around schools to have a heightened awareness of their driver behaviour,” Cr Schrinner said.

Of the 260 fines issued in semester one, 100 were for drivers stopping at ‘no stopping signs’.

Another 64 drivers were pipped for stopping on roads with yellow edge lines.

Indooroopilly School zones were the city’s worst, attracting 28 fines.

Twenty-four were issued across Clayfield and 23 more in East Brisbane, while 78 motorists in South Brisbane were issued “zero value” warning notices in term two alone.

“School drop-off and pick-up can be hectic during peak times and the last thing any parent wants to see is someone to get hurt, so I urge all road users to slow down, park safely and don’t rush,” Cr Schrinner said.

60 schools will be at the top of the hit list for council’s term three parking blitz – chosen due to a prevalence of complaints over the past few months.

The crackdown follows council’s 2020/21 budget that allows for some $37.5 million in revenue from parking fines and fees.
