QUEENSLAND public schools have dominated a list of schools with the least amount of students per full-time teacher.
An analysis by The Courier-Mail using enrolment and teacher data from the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) has revealed the number of students per full-time equivalent teacher at every Queensland school for 2018.

Of the 100 Queensland schools with the lowest student-teacher ratio – excluding special schools and schools with under 20 students – 74 were public schools.
The remainder was made up of 17 Catholic schools, and nine independent schools.
Catholic schools also featured heavily in a list of the 100 Queensland schools with the most number of students per full-time equivalent teacher, with 47 Catholic schools recording a student-teacher ratio of at least 17, along with 44 public schools and nine independent schools.
The overall average student to teacher ratio in Queensland sat at 13.5 for 2018, the same as the Australian average.
The ratio sat at 14.7 for Queensland primary schools and 12.1 for secondary schools, with both decreasing over the past decade.
Dr Steven Lewis of Deakin University’s Research for Educational Impact Centre said decades of research showed class sizes could have an effect on student learning.
“This is especially so if one considers the education of the ‘whole student’, including not just their academic learning but also their social and emotional development,” Dr Lewis said.
“However, we have yet to show that smaller class sizes necessarily lead to better learning outcomes for all students in all situations, or better working conditions for their teachers.”
Dr Lewis said while schools may opt to spend their discretionary budget on additional teachers, they could also be spending it on other learning-related resources.
“The single figure of student-teacher ratio can obscure how well a particular school is resourced, as well as how they have decided to use these resources,” he said.
