The top performing NAPLAN schools in Moreton have been revealed following the 2019 results release.

Do our schools need NAPLAN?

The top performing NAPLAN schools from Moreton Bay region have been revealed following the 2019 results release.

Students in Year 3, 5, 7 and 9 took part in the controversial nationwide standardised test in May.

The test is designed to measure students in literacy and numeracy and track progress.

Across the Moreton region found Year 3 and Year 5 students at The Lakes College got an average NAPLAN score of 4877 — the area’s top performing primary school.

The second best performing primary schools was Patricks Road State School in Ferny Hills where the average result was 4871 for Year 3 and Year 5 students.

The third best performing primary school was All Saints Primary School at Albany Creek where the schoolwide average score was 4850.

Genesis Christian College, at Bray Park, was Moreton’s top performing high school. There Year 7 and Year 9 students received an average NAPLAN score of 5818.

Grace Lutheran College made the top five. Acting head of middle school teaching and learning Kate McKenzie said the college was “proud of all our students and the diligent approach that they have to their learning,” she said.

“Grace Lutheran College uses NAPLAN data collectively along with many other forms of data to monitor the growth of each individual student.

“This allows the College to celebrate growth for each individual student and identify areas of growth.

“This information together with our culture of students having a growth mindset, enables our students to strive to reach their goals as they progress through their journey at Grace.”

The second best performing high school was The Lakes College where the average score was 5767, while the third best performing school was Prince of Peace Lutheran College in Everton Hills where the average score was 5742.

The Lakes College principal Simon Armstrong said he was “delighted” the school had yet again been identified as one of the best performing schools in the Moreton Bay region.

“The College is committed to promoting a culture of excellence by providing an educational setting of the highest standard,” Mr Armstrong said.

“These outstanding results will further assist the College to drive improvement in our teaching and learning program across the school from Prep to Year 12.

“Students need to develop good skills in numeracy, reading, writing, spelling and grammar and punctuation in order to grow into confident, well-educated young men and women prepared for higher learning, leadership and life.”

The NAPLAN test remains controversial with the Queensland Government calling for a national review into the test.

But advocates maintain the test is an important way to view student and school progress at one moment in time and schools use the results to improve teaching.

Living Faith Lutheran Primary School principal Jane Mueller said the school did not put a specific focus on NAPLAN. The majority of students at the school achieved above the state average.

“It is just another day and we encourage our parents to view it that way,” she said.

Ms Mueller said the results reflected teachers’ approach to teaching.

“Our goal is to help children to think rather then tell them what to think,” she said.

“All students at our school participated including those with learning difficulties, so to see that result is really encouraging.”

Ms Mueller said literacy and numeracy skills were vital for children to master.

She said in order for student to achieve highly in these areas they first had to learn soft skills such as persistence, tenacity, collaboration and perseverance.

“Schools need to focus first on soft skills and second on academics,” she said.
