Meet our Queensland students hoping for a top OP1 result

They have studied hard for years, and now this crop of Year 12 students are hoping to wake up today to a top OP1 result

JUST 535 Queensland graduates will receive an OP1 today, and these students hope to be among them.

Brisbane State High School’s Madeleine Orr said she was “fairly confident” she has worked so hard for, but said she would be happy with the result regardless.

“I know I worked hard this year, and that in one way or another I’ll get to where I want to be,” she said.

Her plan is to study a Bachelor of Arts at The University of Queensland, with a concurrent Diploma of Languages in French.

While she was unsure of what career path she would pursue, she hopes to end up in a job involving languages.

Ms Orr said Year 12 was a year of “ups and downs”, and she was thankful for the support of her friends, family and teachers to get through the “rough patches”.

“In retrospect I’m grateful for the challenges as much as the successes, I think I’ve grown more as a person and learned more about myself over the past year because of them,” she said.

“I feel a mixture of relief and sadness (about finishing Year 12).

“It’s a great feeling to have no obligations for a little while, at least in terms of exams and assignments, but at the same time there’s a lot about high school that I’ll miss, the people especially.”

Kenmore State High School’s Megan Gardener also has her sights set on the top mark, and hoped to go on to study a dual degree at UQ in Arts and Law.

She said it was an “absolute relief” to be finished school, but had been living in “purgatory” between finishing school and finding out her OP.

“I always said my dream job would not be being a politician, but more and more I’m thinking to myself that maybe it is,” she said.

Yeronga State High School’s Alithia Bowmen said Year 12 was mentally and emotionally tough, but still the best year of school.

“It feels like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders,” she said.

Expecting to receive an OP1 today, she hoped to gain entry into Law and Economics at UQ next year in a bid to become either a human rights or environmental lawyer.
