But advocates maintain the test is an important way to view student and school progress at one moment in time and schools use the results to improve teaching.

Beenleigh State High School principal Matt O’Hanlon, whose school caters for a diverse range of students and got an OP1 last year, said his staff were focused on data yet to be released which gauges how students have improved from year to year.
“We are more interested in the relative gain data which is pointing to strong improvements for our students,” Mr O’Hanlon said.
“The data out today is preliminary which does not show how a student has progressed over the two years since their last test.
“The school focuses on the relative gain not the school mean which is how tables are designed.
“Backgrounds of students and their starting skills often vary because of varying socio-economic backgrounds.
“Last year, we had major improvements and in some skills our relative gain data was in excess of the state.”
