Wine, cyber security and aviation are among the new tertiary courses thousands of students will study as they head back to University this week, as institutions diversify to offer more left-of-field options.

WINE, cyber security and aviation are among the new tertiary courses thousands of students will study as they head back to University this week.
The University of Southern Queensland is offering a diploma in wine, the only undergraduate diploma of its kind, among masters in data, editing and publishing and clinical psychology.
In the Diploma of Wine, students would learn the fundamental concepts of wine science and minors available in Grape Growing, Wine Making or Wine Business Management.

While Southern Cross University is now offering bachelor degrees in contemporary music, digital media and communications and information technology at its Coomera campus.
And their Bachelor of Business domestic students majoring in Aviation Management will this year be able to earn their commercial pilot license through a partnership with Air Gold Coast.
Budding pilot Indiana Marshall, 18 said she has always wanted to “be up in the sky” after having been raised by parents in the industry.
“I think it’s great because I get to learn all of the elements, I get to know the background, the behind-the-scenes of flying, it’s good to have that information before I can start flying,” she said.
Peer student Ryley Gardener said his dream job is a commercial pilot working in one of the top airlines.
He said studying the combination of business and aviation has the benefit of providing you with extra knowledge, especially if one day he decides piloting is not for him.
Queensland University of Technology has this year offered a Bachelor of Biomedical Science/Bachelor of Mathematics and a Master of Digital Communication with other new programs available online.
The University of Sunshine Coast has three new degrees available at their Moreton Bay campus, a Bachelor of Computer Science, Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical and Electronic) with Honours, and a Bachelor of Engineering (Mechatronic) with Honours.
And Griffith will welcome students to its new Business Innovation, Dental Hygiene and numerous double degrees have generated interest as attractive options for applicants.
UQ’s deputy Vice Chancellor Professor Joanne Wright said new areas of study were opened all the time, with student interest quickly following.
This year the university is offering several new programs including a Bachelor of Humanities (Western Civilisation)/Laws (Honours), a Master of Quantitative Biology and a Master of Cyber Security among other areas of study.
“As seen with UQ’s new cyber security programs, this student demand is no doubt following the massive growth that has been seen in the information security industry,” she said.
