FULL LIST: Queensland College of Teachers TEACHX Awards winners

From one of Queensland’s most experienced educators to a science teacher who helps his students save endangered animals on the reef, the winners of the TEACHX Awards have been announced. SEE THE FULL LIST OF WINNERS.

Queensland’s best educators have been revealed, with the winners announced live at a special virtual edition of the state’s most prestigious teacher awards this afternoon.

Six of the state’s most amazing educators were crowned the best at the Queensland College of Teachers’ TEACHX Awards.

The TEACHX Awards are the only Queensland Government prize to recognise both government and non-government school teachers and are sponsored by The Courier-Mail.

Mabel Park State High School teacher Sophie Gruhl, who was made Year 11 and 12 co-ordinator just 18 months into her role at the Logan school, won the Excellence in Beginning to Teach award.

Ormiston College mathematics teacher Joel Speranza won the Excelling in Teaching Award, which recognises inspiration in Queensland teachers, for his work developing interactive mathematics video lessons which have been downloaded hundreds of times.

Townsville science teacher Brett Murphy from Belgian Gardens State School, who helps students to save endangered animals and the Great Barrier Reef, won the Innovation in Teaching award.

Executive Principal Meredith Wenta from Kirwan State High School in Townsville won the Excellent Leadership in Teaching and Learning award, for her work in ensuring students achieve on a local, state and national level, while Cairns West State School Deputy Principal Cathy Nixon, who led the introduction of one of the nation’s leading school support hubs for students and their families, won the Outstanding Contribution to School Community Award.

Finally, West Moreton Anglican College teacher Dell Rathbone won The Courier-Mail’s Outstanding Contribution To Teaching Award for her work in inspiring and supporting students.

The 82-year-old teacher began teaching at just 17 years of age, and is now educating the grandchildren of students she first taught.
