Queensland students discover they got the perfect ATAR 2021

The wait is over for Queensland’s Year 12 graduates today, with tens of thousands of students celebrating record results across the state.

Of the more than 51,000 students to complete their final year of school in 2021, about 27,000 got their Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) today.

Just 32 students in Queensland achieved a top ranking of 99.95, with the superstar students qualifying with a range of subjects including economics, literature, engineering, mathematical methods and four languages.

Schools set to celebrate top students today included Brisbane Grammar School, Brisbane State High School, Ipswich Grammar School, Brisbane Boys’ College, Nudgee College, St Rita’s College, Matthew Flinders Anglican College and Brisbane Girls Grammar School.

Annabelle Hazelton, Orlando Hunter, Thejana Udawattage, Samantha Atherton, Caine Day, Abigail King, Aditya Neurgaonkar and Claudia McPherson are among the cohort of students to all receive a perfect ATAR score.

About 6500 students, or 23 per cent, received an ATAR of 90 or above, with the median ATAR for the 2021 cohort 78.55.

More than 23,000 students who qualified for an ATAR managed to have general English in their top five best subjects.

About 19,000 or 70 per cent of students landed an ATAR by completing five general subjects, 4500 completed four general subjects and one applied subject, and about 3600 completed four general subjects and VET course.

Education Minister Grace Grace congratulated the graduating cohort, and said despite disruptions to schooling due to the Covid-19 pandemic, more than 90 per cent of students achieved their Queensland Certificate of Education.

“This is our second year under the new QCE system, and we can again thank our teachers and principals for supporting students to achieve their goals,” she said.

Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) chief executive officer Chris Rider said it had been a year of outstanding achievement by students, with more than 1100 set to receive academic commendations for landing an ‘A’ grade in six subjects.

“There are also certificates for the 317 students who achieved the highest result in at least one general subject,” he said.

Further QCE winners, including Queensland’s overall highest achiever, were set to be announced in February.

Independent Schools Queensland acting chief executive Shari Armistead said the 2021 graduates should be commended for their handling of the disruptions to their schooling over the past two years.

“Everyone across the state is wishing the Year 12 graduates every success in their future,” she said.

“Their next big decision could involve university, skills training, joining the workforce, or a gap year.

“For some that decision will be clear, and for others, it might be a little more involved.

“Whatever decision these young people make, they should know there is a wide range of support.”

QTAC chief executive John Griffiths said he was pleased to see students qualify for an ATAR through a mix of general subjects, applied subjects and VET qualifications.

“This reinforces the broad education system that we have in Queensland and the range of opportunities available to students,” Dr Griffiths said.

“I congratulate all students that have achieved an ATAR but remind students that in addition to the ATAR there are a range of other options for accessing post school education.”
