Thousands of Queensland students have successfully navigated a turbulent two years to graduate university, despite the challenges posed by the outbreak of the Covid pandemic.

The Courier-Mail today celebrates the remarkable achievements of every student to graduate from the Queensland University of Technology this month, including the state’s future lawyers, nurses, doctors, artists, actors and business leaders.

Of the 11,000 students who graduated from QUT in January business and law students made up a huge swathe of the cohort, with the 3609 graduates comprising more than 30 per cent of students.

Health fields were also well-represented with 2845 students graduating, while creative students made up about 23 per cent of the cohort with 2704 graduates.

QUT Vice-Chancellor Professor Margaret Sheil commended the hard work of the 2021 cohort, during “difficult times”.

She also said she was proud that with more than 1000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students enrolled in 2021, the university had one of the highest Indigenous Australian student populations in the country.

“Our Indigenous students are among the most successful in the country, and QUT has one of the nation’s highest tertiary completion rates,” she said.

She said there were 161 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Graduates in 2021 up from 145 in 2020.

Griffith University Vice Chancellor Professor Carolyn Evans also congratulated its 2021 cohort, with 5586 graduating last month.

The most popular degree was a Bachelor of Nursing – with 747 graduates – followed by a Bachelor of Business (222) and a Doctor of Medicine (198).

Professor Evans this year’s group had persevered through their studies, despite the pandemic.

“We are so proud of all of our Griffith graduates,” she said.

“We recognise the last two years have been some of the most challenging and to reach this milestone shows absolute commitment and hard work.

“We congratulate our Griffith graduates and extend our support as they face the future with confidence and skills to thrive in a rapidly changing world.”
