One of Queensland’s top universities has announced a major $200 million infrastructure expansion at one of its key campuses.

Griffith University is set to construct a new eight-storey building at its Nathan campus south of Brisbane, catering for more than 3500 students and about 200 staff.

The university’s criminology and education schools would be relocated to the new state-of-the-art building, with construction set to begin in mid-2023 and be completed by 2026.

Griffith also flagged plans to create a new Brisbane city campus in 2027, with the site set to house more than 7000 students and 500 staff.

Vice Chancellor and President Professor Carolyn Evans said with more people making the move to Queensland, the opportunity for further investment and improvement to the university’s facilities was high.

“Griffith has played an important role in the education landscape of Queensland and will continue to do so,” she said.

“Staff and students are very excited about the new building because it will mean they are learning and working in a world-class facility which will replace more outdated accommodation.

“We have spent a lot of time in the design phase of this project to ensure that the building will meet the needs of our staff and students supporting globally recognised research, teaching and learning.”

Like most Australian universities, Griffith has faced significant challenges over the past two years as strict border closures kept international students out.

More than 600 new construction jobs were expected to be created during the build.
