RENOWNED Queensland businesswoman Ann Sherry has been named the new Chancellor of the Queensland University of Technology.

The appointment of the high-profile Ms Sherry, who has held number of senior executive and non-executive positions throughout her career, comes two months after the resignation of the university’s previous Chancellor Xiaoling Liu.

Ms Sherry, who was named an Officer of the order of Australia in 2004 for work on corporate management policies addressing gender and social justice, is currently a non-executive director of the National Australia Bank, a director of Infrastructure Victoria, non-executive Chair of the Enero Group, UNICEF Australia, the Port of Townsville and Federation Asset Management.

Born in Gympie, Ms Sherry attended South Brisbane private girls school Somerville House and the University of Queensland, as well as living and working in the United Kingdom for several years.

She went on to hold executive management positions within the Westpac group, including as chief executive of Bank of Melbourne.

In 2007 she was appointed to chief executive of leisure company Carnival Australia, before transitioning into the role of executive chair, a position she held until 2019.

QUT Vice-Chancellor Margaret Sheil said Ms Sherry’s work advocating for women and Indigenous Australians aligned with the university’s strategy.

“I look forward to welcoming Ann Sherry back to Queensland and working with her to forge a bright future for the university and for the state,” she said.

“I also want to acknowledge the valuable contribution our current Chancellor, Dr Xiaoling Liu has made to QUT and the Council over the past two and half years.”

Ms Sherry will commence the five-year term on August 22, with Deputy Chancellor Peter Howes acting chancellor until then.
