Ferny Hills State School school toilets under fire for being ‘health risk’

Parents at a Brisbane primary school claim their kids’ health is at risk due to dodgy toilet facilities.

Parents at a Brisbane primary school are demanding an immediate upgrade to the existing toilet facilities, claiming they pose a health risk to students.

Cracked plastic seats, a stench of urine and dodgy taps are just some of the issues allegedly plaguing the toilet facilities at Ferny Hills State School, with parents claiming kids are finding it difficult to even wash their hands.

A petition has even been launched to highlight the issue, with LNP education spokesman Christian Rowan saying schools having to resort to such measures for maintenance on essential infrastructure was “truly shocking”.

“The state Labor Government must immediately fix these toilet and bathroom facility issues in next week’s state budget,” he said.

“It is a fundamental human right for students in our state schools to be provided access to clean and functioning toilets.”

Dr Rowan said it was particularly concerning to hear from parents that some taps were not working properly.

“This risks good hand hygiene, with the potential transmission of infectious diseases such as COVID-19 and Norovirus in our state schools,” he said.

A Department of Education spokesman said the department was “committed to delivering high quality educational facilities for all Queensland state schools”.

“The department has been working with Ferny Hills State School regarding their amenities block,” he said.

“Technical reports due by the end of this week will be reviewed and the necessary rectification work made a priority.”
