Queensland students discover they got the perfect ATAR 2021

Medical courses remain the toughest degrees to get into for prospective students, with the minimum ATAR thresholds for more 1800 Queensland university courses revealed.

More than 15,000 university offers were sent out by the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre on Thursday, with nursing, arts and business among the most popular courses.

Incredibly two courses at CQUniversity – the Bachelor of Medical Sonography and Graduate Diploma of Medical Sonography and the Bachelor of Echocardiography and Cardiac Physiology/Graduate Diploma of Echocardiography – were recorded as having a minimum threshold of 99.95, the highest ATAR possible.

Those wanting to study a Bachelor of Medical Science at Griffith needed to land a 99.85 or higher, while the same degree at the University of the Sunshine Coast needed a 99.8.

The minimum ATAR threshold for a Bachelor of Physiotherapy (Honours) at the University of Queensland was up from 99.05 last year to 99.5 this year, while a Bachelor of Medical Imaging (Honours) at the Queensland University of Technology saw its cut-off drop slightly from 99.95 to 99.35.

A Bachelor of Nursing remained one of the most in-demand courses for 2022, but the ATAR rank varied widely by institution.

While QUT recorded a minimum ATAR threshold of 86, UQ required an 84.8, Griffith University an 81, CQUniversity 68 and the University of Southern Queensland 65.6.

Other courses requiring top ATARs included a Bachelor of Advanced Finance and Economics (Honours) at UQ (99), a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) at UQ (98) and a Bachelor of Midwifery at the University of the Sunshine Coast. (98).

UQ deputy vice-chancellor (academic) Professor Joanne Wright said the institution made almost 4000 offers to prospective students on Thursday, with Health Science, Engineering and Environmental Studies in high demand.

“The demand for our dual program Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)/Masters of Engineering grew by 27 per cent with more than 300 first preference applications,” Professor Wright said.

“There’s also very strong interest in Environmental Science, which is up 22 per cent and demand for Health Science is up by 19 per cent.”

Professor Wright told students who didn’t receive an offer for their preferred course “not to despair”, and said places were still available.

“Limited places may also be available in high demand programs such as Dental Science, Physiotherapy, Nursing, Midwifery and provisional entry to the Doctor of Medicine so some applicants who missed out on an offer in the main round may still be eligible to receive an offer in later rounds,” she said.

“They can conditionally accept an offer and still wait to see if they get their first choice.”
